Hi everyone

Can anyone recommend any good bars - plus any good restaurants for veggies?

IB, if you eat fish, then there are no worries at all, but if, like my wife, you're strictly veg, then I'm afraid that while CVO has improved dramatically in the past 5 years, the Portugese run restaurants have yet to catch up. They'll offer a veg option like boiled plate of veg (tasteless), a plate of salad (boring) or maybe risotto or pasta (inappropriate).

There's a wealth of newer restaurants run by Northern Europeans (Dutch, Belgians, English, Irish) with imaginitive options, but these often tend to be more expensive.

Top of mind recomendations that we return to frequently are
(in no particular order):

Ele & Ela
L'Orange
Bon Bon
O Salmao (in Monte Carvoeiro Square)
Peppers (Also in the above square)
Barnhards in Ferragudo
The Village Inn, Mexilhoeira da Larregacao (see FreeMap)

Bon appetite !

As to bars, thats a different story.....
But what is a vegetarian bar ?

Hi, both my daughters are vegetarians altho they will eat fish if they have to, usually only option if you are in a restaurant with no veggie option. We have found Ele and Ela and Maximes do a small veggie menu, food is very good but slightly more expensive than the local ones. Also Chinese and Italian restaurants have non meat grub. I agree it is more difficult if you want to eat 'local' as there is not much choice.

e-richard - sorry to poach the topic, but you are the first person to mention Bernard's in Ferragudo - we keep meaning to go there but haven't got round to it yet - since I agree with all your other recommendations (except I think Bob Bon have lost it of late) I would be very interested in your verdict

Graham, what can I say, they're featured in the (unfinished) restaurant section on our own website ! Click the WWW button below.

Good home style cooking from a friendly Irish couple. Menu changes, so can't necessarily comment too much on that, but been there 3 or 4 times and never disappointed. We've never been in high season, so have never seen it crowded.

Oh, and unlike some of the others on my list - not overly expensive

You also cannot afford to miss going to O'Patio down at the beach. It is the oldest and first restaurant and certainly one of the best traditional portugese ones. Great waiters and service and food to die for. The old wooden beams on the ceiling give that added ambience. Choose your own lobster from the water tank if that appeals!

Hi, I'm vegetarian and visit carvoeiro twice a year and I never starve!!

Happy's and Oasis both have veggie dishes on the menu.

Both of which I would highly recommend!!
