Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
Re: Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
As the instigator, along with Gambrinus, of the original meet-ups I would make the following comments.
Yes in theory it is a good idea but it needs someone to organise it otherwise, like G. and myself, you can waste a lot of time just sitting and waiting in case someone arrives.
After initially starting well and with up to 30 people on some occasions, interest seemed to diminish to the point where the two of us (good friends) were getting bored wth the same old conversations in the absence of anyone else.
If, as we now have new people on the forums, there is a demand for it - then start up again, but be prepared as the wheel turns full circle for it to drop off again. Let's however hope not - with the state of the economy, crooked politicians, unusual weather, unjustifiable cost of the Olympics, Portuguese bureacracy etc. there must be plenty to talk about
Previously we felt that it was a good idea for a local to be there to welcome visitors - whether this is in fact necessary is a moot question.
Do you want a fixed venue on a fixed night or do you want ad hoc meetings when and wherever?
Consider these facts. Answer these questions. Then you have the basis for possible successful meet-ups

Re: Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
Two thoughts:
1. I don't think that fixed meetings and spontaneous get togethers are mutually exclusive. The latter work very well when they work.
2. It is nice to have a fixed evening/time/place but I don't think the locals should feel obligated to sit and wait. Just name the bar, time and dayofweek, and suggest that anyone turns up - wearing their CVO badge - and with luck someone else will be there. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't, but lets not make it too onerous for anyone in particular.
and it could be even better if Roy and/or Gambrinus and hopefully Kteee turn up

Great idea
Re: Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
I for one would love to meet up with some of you if you had a meeting .....it's always nice to put faces to names...i think!
We are over from 12th to 25th June so just post up a place, date and time and if there is alcohol we will do our best to be there

Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to attend for quite a while - I've been told that my post op recovery looks like taking the rest of this year at least
considering it has already been 19 weeks
Re: Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
I favour e-richards idea: a fixed location and day and time, and see who shows upor not. If you are all alone one evening, just have a drink and move on, if others are there have a great conversation and more drinks. This should work better in the Winter months, when not as many members are around. Ad hoc pre-arranged meetings could be arranged at all times.
Re: Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
Yep best, a place and time list for a twelve month period , meeting twice a month to cover people beginning/ end of months stay. One bar one month one the next.
Listed for day, date , time , month , pub all on another thread. That way if people want to turn up with their badges to meet, they can, if no one there than no probs, as said have a drink then leave, if not a jolly god chinwag over a jar or two or bottle or so hic hic

Re: Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
OK, lets kick it off as follows:
June 2009
Every Wednesday
6pm - 7.30pm
Bar Talvez
Wear your badge, or buy one at the Palacio do Cône in the Square.
For those who haven't sampled Rachel & Sergio's wonderful hospitality, Bar Talvez is about half way up Restaurant hill on the left, going up, between Casa Algarvia and Brady's Irish Bar.
Its small, elegant, welcoming, non-smoking indoors and very fairly priced.

Re: Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
Certainly agree about Bar Talvez, it is a bit small but very, nicely decorated drinks more expensive than Mungo,s 50cents more for a Baileys.
but its a good place to start the night.

Re: Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
Good to see they are restarting. Thanks e-richard. Perhaps we'll see you (and others) there should it last into September.
Re: Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
I like the idea of a fixed venue/day so will try to call into Bar Talvez as posted when next in cvo - flights booked for the first week in Sept but hopefully will visit before then.

Re: Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
Why not get Bar Talvez to sell them? It makes a lot of sense to sell them where we all intend to meet up. I am sure they'd be pleased to do so - especially when it will ensure more bums on seats.lyndabear wrote:....May not have found where to get a badge but will do my best ....

Re: Restart the Meet-ups? POLL
I had thought of that, but then "someone" would need to move stock between the various outlets. Bar Talvez is this months flavour, but next month the meet-ups may be somewhere else ? We only have a small stock of badges and then "someone" would also have to go around collecting the proceeds intermittently.Michael Crane wrote:Why not get Bar Talvez to sell them? The Ice cream parlour is open all day and well into the night, is right there in the centre, by the square and are sponsors of this website.
Why complicate matters
