Mosquitos

If my memory serves me right, last year, following on from a quite dry winter, we had very few mosquitos. As the winter just past was supposedly the wettest in 15 years, I wonder what the mozzie population will be like.

I remember that walking down the road from A Rede to Algar Seco, the restaurant that was (is?, It's been a while since I walked that way.) Togi used to have mozzies swarming near the roadside.

Had my first two bites of the season , out comes the bug spray ( I mix small bottle vodka with 5 drops Lavender 5 drops Eucalyptus essential oils and use as a room spray , or spray onto skin, test on inside of wrist first , wash of if irritated. Please dont drink it !!! )

Do you mean an airline size small bottle or a hip flask size small bottle?

I once used my old first holy communion veil as a mosquito net,
but it kept falling off.I have even considered using one of the
covers you put over food to stop flies etc.
The bit I hate is when you first here that fatal buzz you try in vain to ignore
it but you know that after 20 sleepness minutes up you'll be scaling every inch of wall
to find the little beggar.Then when you get back into bed 5 minutes later back it comes.
If only you didn't need to breathe during the night!!

Wilkinsons are selling a solar powered Mossie sizzler light to use when eating out side at night.
( if it works will move it into the bedroom )
One will be in our bag when we next come out.
Will keep small boys amused for hours.

Does the solar power charge up a battery? If not how does the device work at night?

Its charges the battery by solar then as soon as the light fails it activates.

Buy a Chameleon Jaybee...wonderful insect/mossie eaters and a green method too ...
or encourage Gekkos into your house/apartment/villa.
When living in Lagoa we had 'resident' Gekkos and never had a problem with mossies!(they lived behind the pictures on our walls)
But we had a few friends, who owned bars/restaurants and they kept a Chameleon on the premises (usually to be found on ceiling curled around the lights) and never had problems with mossies....
oh and another idea, eat plenty of Marmite(Mike Chislehurst idea that I copied). When Im out in Carvoeiro I always eat marmite on toast for breakfast and it seems to work..I believe the 'scent' of the yeast in your skin puts the mossies off!
Mind you, I have to say, Ive never seen a mossie in the apartment I stay in at Monte Dourado..
Oh how I wish I was there now..sigh
