Ive lived here quite a while and have portuguese family here so I get the chance to hear a lot about whats going on in both the ex pat community and the portuguese community.
If what I have said is wrong then just let me know, usually I just like to pass on stuff I know to help others.

I am not saying that what you said was wrong but you are disputing some of the facts put by others, which is your right of course on an open forum.

I too lived in Portugal for some time,in fact I went to school there and I would dispute some of your points.Living amongst the Portuguese I found quite a fear of authority especially of the local camara and police and often wondered what the revolution did except to exchange one form of dictatorship for another.
I know many Portuguese that have come to live here in England and they enjoy their lifestyle and standard of living. They may very well send money back to their homeland to family but those I know and speak to have no wish to return there and really enjoy the facilities that this country has to offer for instance great libraries theatres museums, further higher education and the great variety of shops. There is often too much negativity put here about the UK instead of bolstering the vast amount of good on offer. In the main the British are kind and caring people.I daresay the same can be said of Portugal.
A good Portuguese friend of our family lived in UK for some years then had to return for family reasons. But she cant wait to get back here again.
I went to school in the Algarve and have good memories and made good friends.I would hate to see it all disappear under golf courses.

Everyones got different opinions on this of course and yours is just as valid as mine or anyone elses. From living here im sure you understand more than most what the reality of living here actually is. This is no utopia by any means but I truly feel that there is more good than bad here (well I wouldnt stay if I thought other wise would I  ).
I dont think anyone wants to see the Algarve turn into a huge golf course but im sure the miners in Wales, the N east and midlands never wanted to see their countryside turn into industrial estates either, such is the price of progress.
I dont hate the UK at all infact im very proud of a lot that it has to offer and the British are not bad people, hell I am one  . My circumstances mean that I am here to stay in the Algarve for the forseeable future and if things were different whos to say if I wouldn´t go back and work there instead, the money would certainly be nice!
Its true that many Portuguese still have an inbuilt fear of authority and this will be part of the culture for many years to come but the university graduates and the young (under 30) that I know are not afraid to stand up for their rights. I believe that the slow process of cultural change has begun and therefore we shouldnt worry about the people still being under a dictatorship.
Generally I have found that the only form of power to be weilded here is held by those with the money, the average politician hasn´t got a chance.
To be honest dust devil its nice to be able to discuss this in an open forum with people such as yourself and always interesting to hear other opinions. Despite what you may think I know that my opinion is not exclusive by any means and that is all it is, an opinion

To get back to the original question ref the track status I can assure all that it is well 'on track' having observed dozens of huge machines moving mountains over the past three months , this is no smoke screen and in fact the 2008 World Super Bike race is already scheduled for next Oct/Nov. Over 1000 jobs will be created initially and with all the spin offs (No pun intended) in the industry the local residents are very positive indeed ....and very enterprising even cutting small tracks up to the area to be used as observation posts, for a small fee of course !
I remember the only people complaining in Resident Magazine four years ago were foreigners , one German gentleman wrote up advising me (Who wrote a positive article) to go back to Uk and buy a house next to the M25...(I already had one there actually at that time ) I talked to a number of local residents and foreigners ...residents were very positive whilst Foreigners were negative except for the ones who were trying to sell property nearby...they were Oh so positve, push prices up they said.

We will see.......
