Where are the buyers going to come from?
Hey tbbr...this isn't in any way a flippant comment or going along either with the "positive/negative" thread but perhaps when you are next over and have some time to relax and read...grab a copy of Ellie's book...I am sure she will give a very honest and balanced picture of life here...albeit a few years ago but still informative for those thinking of relocating. Looking forward to reading it myself...no I am not on any commission 
Ellie and Kteee's comments are right on the mark and I certainly wouldn't call either of those ladies negative people. Come over and live, suck it and see, it can only be one thing and that will be an "experience" whether good, bad or indifferent. But do your OWN homework (not the blah...blah of real estate agents, developers and others) and don't come over on a "wing and a prayer". Some do make a successful and honest business, whilst others scratch around trying to make a living, or worse get involved in shady activities.
Oh and by the way be careful with those "good Portuguese lawyers"...I haven't met one yet...all I do know is they have a nice collection of Audis and BMW's outside their offices...sorry...not my favourite people here...yes, I am bitter and twisted

certainly a guide from those who have been through all the pitfalls will be invaluable and much better than anything currently available.
As to lawyers have a look in the carparks in the UK these days you won,t see many old bangers there either
There is no substitute for experience and certainly no offence was intended when suggesting that past experiences had " coloured " some opinions.
Can,t remember who said " shoot all the lawyers " was it Harpo Marx or WC Fields ??

TBBR has got my interest "A Good Lawyer" in the "A " PLEASE NAME THAT LAWYER.
Solicitors & Barristers in the UK may have their shiney toys sitting outside their offices/chambers, but most really work for their money and unlike their cousins actually do some work for their fees whatever they may or may not be up to. But it is generally felt do not receive their "toys" via making their goal in life to sell property(which is illegal by the way) and more often than not with problems. One such I heard about recently, was that prior to the sale & purchase, dealt with by one such "toy gatherer" of a run down cottage, some of its land (countryside) was cut off without the seller or buyer's knowledge. Apprantly to achieve this the land must have a camara road (even a donkey track) a mountain or river and wait for it. a legal bod. Broom,broom bmw audi here I come. Tbbr you sound a nice person, but forgive me somehwat naive on what actually goes on in the A.
Please for your own sake (and if you have a family) be very very careful and listen to sound advice given to you on this forum by such as Bruxinha and Elle. Take Care.

Rude - not in the least - it is called 'Direct' and in this case its being 'Honest'.
I have made the point on here many times regarding the 'facility' for people to sign in as Guest and I oppose it.
I would expect that said of me if I didn't have the courage of my convictions and add my name to a comment/post.

I am a bit divided on this one...I used to post as a guest and it is how I got used to the forum and it's regular users and once I got regular daily use of the internet I decided to register. There are a lot of people, who whilst put a username are still not registered, so are they any different than someone who just puts guest? Sorry to use you as an example tbbr but you just come to mind on this particular topic. We have come to know his/her username but he/she is still a guest.
I have an idea who one or two of the guests are because of the circumstances they write about...in one of the cases I think they are genuinely not very good with computers and wouldn't even know how to register. For what its worth the solicitor we and many others we have come to know and used without any known problems is Dra Maria Mestre of Almancil.
We have yet to hear an negative report about her.
After only 2 years of property ownership in the Algarve I admit we may still have a naive relaxed atitude.
Any problems we have had ( broken appliances, wrong furniture delivered, building etc ) have always been dealt with effectivley if not as quickly we would have liked and always with a smile and an atitude we would struggle to find here in the UK..
We did look elswhere before deciding on the algarve , all the agents we contacted were English whose atitudes ranged from " could,nt be bothered to business practices that would not stand close scrutiny ( they were English ).
Why the algarve ( value NO, ease of buying, yes eventually, infrastructure NO ! ) It was LOCATION, LOCATION ,LOCATION.
Plus one other factor, HOW OFTEN do you see press or other media reports of property scandals , land grabs, bankrupt builders in Portugal compared to Spain, Cyprus, Turkey etc ???.
Remember where was voted No 1 place in the WORLD for your " Place in the Sun ".

On the matter of my retort - that's the way I see it and I stick by my remarks.
Apologies, if you find it offensive, but I have tired of the comments made by the faceless few on this forum who appear to have a baseless comment to make on a variety of subjects but lack the backbone to stand up and be counted.
That's a good way to start the day.........

know what you mean tbbr..I hear myself sometimes..and think Blimey! I'm turning into a 'Victoria' Meldrew(I love that series
).....I wouldn't want to appear negative with remarks about moving to Algarve..
on the contrary..and I /we have no regrets about our time there(only coming back
)...most of it was terrific..and I have to say that lifes never been the same since living back in UK..
thats why I visit as much as possible and for as long as possible!
I'd say 'go for it'..but plan well and steadily (specially if you have youngsters)and be on your guard (as Bruxhy as put so well)..
The question is coming up again in our family.......
my daughter & son-in-law are contemplating a move to Turkey..but we are giving them the same advice....
be as sure as you can before such a big step...particularly with my 10 yearold Grandson in mind!
