There is new Medical Centre with a good Dutch doctor, English-,German-, and Portuguese-speaking, in the centre of Carvoeiro, on the right of the taxi-rank, behind the kiosk.

Not because there is a better system here with more money and a shorter waiting list, no, but because the operation was paid for by the English NHS.
How did you manage to get NHS in England to pay if you are living in Algarve or are you still registered in UK and not in Algarve ?? Do you still have property in England.

I once saw something on the net …on a forum probably…saying that there is a special agreement between uk and pt where if a Brit has major surgery on pt nhs the hospital can bill the uk nhs for it. And vice versa….
but I don’t know if that is, or ever was, the case.
And I guess that’s what the anon. post refers to

Just spoke to Hub about this (hes more up on these things than me)....
he tells me you can have an operation on the continent(quite a lot of folk go across to France for treatment/ops)..if you're willing to travel..as opposed to sitting on waiting list in UK.....
as long as you have written permission from NHS here(UK) it will be paid for by NHS..and so 'lightens ' the load here in 'Inglaterra'!

p.s. How about teeth !...one of our delivery drivers went to Spain for treatment and new choppers..cost him just under £500....they wanted treble that here in UK!

If you are a member of AFPOP you also get a discount. They were also SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper.
good Luck

Has any one any knowledge of Dr John Piper. I have seen advertisements and signs for his practice, I believe he is located somewhere near the water tower.

Have you used him or no anyone that has? I understand that he is a urologist. I will be visiting Carvoeiro in July and August with my young daughter who has kidney problems so it would be reassuring to know that there is an English Doctor close by who I could call if necessary.

Have had an appointment with Dr Piper at his practice in Sesmarias, for very minor surgery. Don't know about him being a urologist but apart from his practice at Sesmarias he has a clinic at a local hospital.

Yes, he is a good and friendly general doctor, dr.Vieira. The practice is near the taxi's, right, behind the kiosk, opposite the chinese restaurant.
He is a dutch doctor and speaks a lot of languages.
Last year my friend went to dr.Pertl, the german doctor and had to pay € 50,=. I heard that the price in the german clinic is the same.

dr.Popken is never there. My daughter had an ear infection, we went to dr.popken, but he wasn´t there. We left a message on his answering-machine, but he didn´t phone back. We went to this dr.Vieira and he helped us very good. He is indeed a friendly man. Dr.Popken phoned 3 days later...
