TV channels - Sky, cable or what

Last month it seems that Sky cut off the signal to the area, for those using a UK card at least. It happened over a year ago but then came back minus ITV, channel 4 and 5.

What choices and prices do I now have to restore english-speaking channels, including as many of the 5 traditional UK channels as possible?

Was this analogue Rob or digital. Reason I ask is that no one would appear to be in the same boat! Or they are not saying. Mike

The setup is a Sky satellite box, bought 2 years ago, feeding an analogue TV.

Hi Rob, the analogue tv shouldn't make any difference, it's the card! There was a thread about this when sky cut off the likes of ITV and Chan 4 last year. I assume the the box and card are registered in the UK in which case you can upgrade it via sky but not the £23 one off it mentions in the thread which has now finished. Here's the thread and if you do a search on sky, there's all sorts of stuff. Hope this helps.

PS If you do upgrade it, make sure you have the serial number of the box and existing card details.

Mike, thanks for this. It gives me pointers for a solution. RJ Technica was the company that installed the Sky system in the first place, so I'll contact them before our next trip.

We need to install a Sat system in a villa which currently does not have one. We do not need the Sky service, so long as we can receive the UK free-to-air channels. Any recommendations on a system and an installer?

RJ Tecnica are very helpful and efficient, they will tell you the best option for you.

Their shop is under the chinese, jota lita, a gale etc, half way up estrada do farol on the right hand side.

you can now get cards in the uk for £20 for itv chan 4 chan 5 itv 3 ect.
or you can also get a freesat box for £150 and it comes with a card its also a new pace box all you would need then is a dish/lnb suggest you get a 1.5 dish with a ...3db lnb

i can if you are not coming to the uk bring one back when i come to visit next

Just to complete our bit of this thread, we contacted R.J Technica on our last visit. The system was installed within two days, and works perfectly. They were very efficient, and the installation is very neat. Thanks for the contact, Kteee, and hope you find your cat.

We used R J Tecnica to install our system a few months ago. With a digibox you can only receive BBC1 and 2, and not ITV, 4 or 5. A card can be supplied in Portugal, which will give you the other free-to-view channels. We tried to duplicate our UK Sky package, by applying for the Sky multiroom service, which gives you a additional card for £10 per month. This works fine in Pt, but you need your installer to set it up. Only problem is that Sky are unhappy that the extra digibox is not connected to a phone, and may remove the service. We may have to resort to buying a card in Pt.
