Walk 2 march 2026 : Moinha de Rocha

Post by Geoff »

Hi all
We did a walk from her 10 years ago to celebrate Alan's 70th.....a slightly different walk now as he's had his 80th. Sue's ode to Alan is worth a read, as are a look at the younger faces....see:
http://ww.forum.carvoeiro.com/viewtopic ... 0&start=15

Note though that these water crossings have all been bridged over!

Anyway, the last time we did this variant was November 2021, seemed like yesterday, see :

http://ww.forum.carvoeiro.com/viewtopic ... 39&t=28646

Anyway, to the details....

Terrain is quite reasonable, but there is quite a long uphill stretch but nothing too steep......there are no water crossings now.

For caffeine addicts, there isn't a cafe at the start of the walk, but there is a cafe on the approach road ( see below).... Cafe A Taberna Nicola on the right , (cafe Andre on the left is closed on monday ).....we expect to be at the cafe about 0930, which is about 10 minutes from the start, if you care to join us.

Start : 10.00

Duration: just over 2.5 hours, 10-12km

Degree of difficulty ( scale 1:5) : 3, Energetic.

Lunch:this is optional, but we will be going back to O Tasco ....I know we went there a few weeks asgo, but it's nice and this is a different walk. Lunch is now 15€ to include bread, butter, olives, chicken assada ( grilled chicken) OR prawn omlette, pudding, water, wine or beer or soft drink and coffee. With tip, 16€.

Directions: From Lagoa, turn left on the N125 and go past the turn-off for Alvor. After a few hundred yards, there is a BP station on your right and a road signposted " Senhora do Verde, Vidigal, Casais, Alcalar, Torre" : turn right here. IF you go past the Hotal Penina on your left, you have gone too far.
Go up this road ( M532). After going through a single lane tunnel and after about another 1/4 mile, make sure you follow the road bending left signed Alcalar ; do NOT go straight on.
You should then soon be crossing the motorway. Carry on, passing A Taberna Nicola cafe on your right, and Cafe Andre a bit later on your left. Carry on past O Tasco, on the left. Just past O Tasco, bear left and follow the Monchique sign. About 5 minutes after O Tasco, you will see a building on the right.

The road swings sharp left here over a bridge ( signposted Montes de Cima, Marmalete, Casais ) : park by the side of the road.

Map reference : 37.2353336,-8.5912714

Usual caveats: all walks are at your own risk, and we do not walk if it is pouring with rain.....I will endeavour to put any cancellation note on this site by 0830 on the day of the walk.

Walking boots/stout trainers , walking pole(s), hats and water recommended. No charge, of course.

Any questions , please ask below or PM me email geoffrey.j.hill@btopenworld.com

Numbers will be limited to 20 , so it is essential to respond below if you want to come. Please also state whether you will want lunch .

Trish and Alan for walk and lunch please.

Thanks for the reminder that I'm still here ten years on and able (just!) to manage your inclines.
Sue's ode was a masterpiece and was very much appreciated.

Last time we did this, it was 12.1km, took 2h 26m, with 221m ascent, speed...a very fast 5kmh.

This time, we must have aged, it was 11.3kms, still 2h 26 m moving time but 2h 46m overall, speed down to 4.5kmh.

Anyway, 14 Walkers and 12 lunchers had a good walk and lunch....without any rain....though lots of landslips
