Body found at Algar Seco

Post by Lowthian »

According to an article on the Portugal resident website
The body of a young man in his 20s was found on Wednesday morning, July 16, near the rocky shore of the Algar Seco tourist spot in Carvoeiro.

A source from the maritime police told the Resident that evidence indicated criminal activity was involved and as thus the case was being investigated by the Polícia Judiciária.

As the Resident went to press, PJ was unavailable to provide further information

I walked along the new board walk from algar seco to the church for the first time yesterday; about half way along there are a set of steps heading down that lead to seemingly nowhere; there are vague steps cut into the rock but basically it leads to a high rocky edge & what ran through my mind was that the new steps were tantamount to assisted suicide, I can't imagine normal health & safety would have permitted them?

Agreed Sunman, noticed that bit in June.

had a walk down the full length of it last week. Impressive. Quite near the edge at times but lovely. Wheelchair friendly all the way IF you enter and exit at either end, not wheelchair friendly from centre entrance. There is one part - down steps- that leads you direcly onto the rocks where someone has chipped steps into the rocks and out to more rocks with more steps.

I had exactly the same thoughts as Sunman. Anybody got any better ideas on why these steps were built?

I'm not normally an 'elf & safety proponent but these stairs are crackers, I had another look this morning, no 'danger' signs anywhere & you might be forgiven for thinking that the new steps mean they're encouraging you to go and have a look,

anyone with kids knows that they're inclined to go running ahead of you, I'm sorry but this is outrageous and a nightmare waiting to happen.

Yes, Sunman, these stairs are crackers. However they were built long before health and safety was the craze. They were used by locals to get access to the fishing points off Algar Seco. I'm sure there would be uproar now if, in the interest of H & S they vandalised the rocks to prevent their use. I've used the Escadinhas more or less yearly between 2000 and 2011. It was obvious from their appearance that it was risky and I took all the precautions that are mentioned in the guide to the Escadinhas that logicbob signposted. I could sit on the rocks for four hours of peace and tranquillity only disturbed by the calling of the gulls or the chugging of the passing fishing boat engines. I lost untold numbers of hooks and weights but fed the local fish copious amounts of fresh mackerel and prawn bait. The Escadinhas was an essential part of my yearly visit to CVO.

I am outraged that your outraged by it all. Kids could quite as easily run ahead over the path to the Escadinhas long before the walkway was built.

Very sad to hear - loss of a life & especially a young life! This area, 'though the scenery is superb, can be a little dangerous as the cliffs are so high.

This was not a tragic fall from the cliffs nor a suicide.

No Gaynor, it's obviously a natural death.
