md 600 driver wrote:You could also use the new eutelsat tooway system it uses a dish to upload and download information, speeds are very good the lowest pagage is 6 down and 1 up which is faster than lots af landline adsl
costs are good too monthly charge £25 per month the dish and modem costs £199 fitting circa £100 but you can fit your self its quite easy

this is a new sytsem dont mix it up with old and other systems that are vey slow

only drawback is that it is fixed useage surfing and emails ok but downloading movies definately out

plus point no phone line required and you can use it else where if you get another dish and take your modem with you i am bringing one to portugal end of august and cancelling my phone line and adsl

TMN are currently offering a home phone + broadband internet wifi - 20Mps which is quite fast, with unlimited data downloads €14.99/mth. if you have current PT line, its basically no charge for installation. check out the phone shop.

Ive just purchased a mobile dongle of 7.2 mps with 1gb data download for €29.99 from the phone shop. (my original was 3.6 mps and €39.99 so they are getting cheaper) You have to use it in 3 mths and then top up €10 each time

No. We have an iPad and have purchased a Mi-Fi on Amazon for less than £50. Go for the unlocked version. We tried Intermarche but the Phone shop could not help/did not understand so we went to Aqua In Portimoa to PTM (I think). We bought a SIM for €5. it gave a bit of air time, but we do need to top it up so will try Intermarche on our next trip. we do not have Internet connection at our villa as we were prepared to pay about £400 a year. The Mi-Fi can be used for 5 different products/computers/tablets basically a tiny modem you can fit in the palm of your hand. :)

I already had a vodafone dongle when I bought a tablet. For €30 I bought a vodafone hub in their shop. You plug the dongle into it and it then connects to a number of devices by wifi. Gives a very strong signal. Cheap and easy solution.

Nothing on top of your normal dongle charges for which vodafone have various tariffs starting at €10 for 10hrs unlimited bandwidth valid for 6 months on older contracts or 3 months on newer contracts if my memory serves me correctly. Ideal solution if you just want to keep up to date on emails and do a bit of browsing but other tariffs would be better for streaming video etc.

Can you wait until 2017?

Extract from the following link

FTTH in Portugal
....... The Portuguese government has also announced a plan to wire all of the 3.9 million homes in Portugal with a fibre-optic connection by the end of 2017. The investment to achieve this, which amounts to €3bn over three to five years, is expected to add 1.8 per cent to Portugal's GDP.

Yes that is probably right. UNFORTUNATELY! here we pay half that. If it was say 20€ a month we probably would have Internet. our villa has all that expensive fiber optic nonsense you must have with a new built, so even if that comes in 2017 unless there is more competition I guess it's going to remain high.

Do you have to have to pay for a phone line with this if you dont want to make any calls?
