Tornado
Re: Tornado
According to the Portuguese news there were 8 injured, not surprising with all the stuff that was flying around. north end of Monte Santo is quite badly damaged with roof tiles, windows, pergolas and glass balconies not where they were any more
Re: Tornado
Many thanks for the photos. I've now seen a few more as well and await a detailed report of the damage to the resort.

Re: Tornado
Boavista escaped damage although within a 100 metres of the path of the Tornado, think it is because it is not exposed to the elements from the sea as it is behind a ridge which protects it from the sea. So lucky and so pleased to say we are safe but our thoughts are with those effected so badly.
Re: Tornado
Thank you jaylay . that is a real relief for us ( I was looking at flights ) and as you say we should think of those in particular the many Portuguese who have been going through a very tough time for the past few years and for who this could be the final straw.
Having you holiday home damaged is one thing, losing your home or having damage which you cannot afford to repair is another.

I saw a major lightening strike in the Monte Carvoeiro area, and another one toward Lagos.
If my pool is anything to go by, over an inch of rain in 2 hours.
Phone and cable TV was down for a couple of hours. Several power cuts.
The sea was like a cauldron with huge waves, with storm force winds, and over 2 metres of sand gone off Centiannes Beach.
I think that the east side of Carvoeiro, whilst battered is relatively undamaged compared to areas inland and to the west of the village.
If anybody is desperately worried and wants their place checking out, call me on 07748 655065.
It is now 5-30 and the wind has dropped, and the sky brighter with clear patches.....we could be even in for a nice sunset....the cloudbase is a golden colour.
Any chance of you driving from CVO along the road towards Ferragudo through Sesmaria tomorrow and reporting back on the actual track of the tornado and width of its track where damage was caused? Lots of us have property in the area and its difficult to gauge how wide or narrow spread the damage is.

On 24th October last year it was Faro Airport that got hit by a tornado injuring 5 people & taking out the control tower and damaging the terminal building. Are we witnessing a new weather pattern which will threaten dangerous tornados every year ?

Re: Tornado
I'm just back from the gym in Lagoa and they told me that 5 people from Cvo were killed .... I don't know how accurate that is but shocking if it's true.

Re: Tornado
According to the newspapers eight people were injured. This includes Lagoa and Silves. I can't help think that five dead would have made the UK news?Colana wrote:I'm just back from the gym in Lagoa and they told me that 5 people from Cvo were killed .... Re: Tornado
Any news from east of cvo ? Caramujeira and Rocha Brava in particular? Any damage or injuries? Looks really bad from pictures.
Re: Tornado
The tornado stayed to the west of CVO. I live high up between ADM and VDM and all we experienced was some high speed gusts of wind and heavy showers. When I took the dog for a walk late in the afternoon there were no signs of damage apart from the odd tree branch. As far as I know the centre of CVO was affected a bit by the heavy rain but the tornado did not reach it. My son lives alongside Monte Santo and there was considerable damage there in terms of roofs being torn off and fences and trees ripped up. He posted a picture on his facebook of a taxi which had been battered by flying tiles and bricks. The tornado seems to have passed from there to the western edge of Lagoa and on to Silves
Re: Tornado
Please God nobody lost their lives in this tornado. We have an apt in Colina Verde, pretty high up, overlooking the roofs of the in street, and it can be windy up there at any time. Right beside Monte Dourado , which is also quite high in places. Even though its quite a walk over to Monte Carvoeiro square , from our roof terrace it looks close enough, and Solferias is quite close as a crow flies. Fingers crossed no damage.
