Re: UK TV Abroad
I agree with EMM, why do they try to keep up the lifestyle of golf and 4x4s by overcharging "honest" people, as stated, sitting in a bar complaining about hard times and no work. They want to get into the real world. !!

Re: UK TV Abroad
My cousin's in-laws sold their London home and went to retire in the Algarve six years ago. They went to non-tourist area as they wanted to avoid the three Fs - fish and chips, football is-all mentality, and fighting! They won't have anything to do with British repairmen and trust only local Portuguese workers. They probably got stung by a dodgy British repairman and the father-in-law was a retired builder so he must have known what con the shyster was attempting. Being quite frail he could not do the work himself. They can hardly be anti Brits or anti ex-pats as they are born and bread pure English Londoners.
As for EMM being anti ex-pat - hardly! He has gone to Portugal to embrace all things Portuguese so in a way he is very loyal to his adopted country A very admirable quality. To leave all things English/British and adopt all things Portuguese is a logical change in lifestyle. You don't travel to a different country to have the same culture as at back home. However those ideals of only local food and culture is now doomed as in the Algarve imports in British food and shops expansions are increasingy common.
You hear loads of complaints about the immigrants coming to stay in the UK not aborbing the culture and assimilating. Conversly you have ex-pat colonies in Spain not mixing or absorbing the Spanish culture.

Re: UK TV Abroad
Why? Many have moved to Portugal not to live as locals but to spend their time in a more temperate climate and enjoy themselves in retirement. If they want (and are willing to pay for) the foodstuffs and products they prefer, then why not?pete-flint wrote:....They want to get into the real world. !!
I admire EMM's attitude to living as a local as much as he is able, but it doesn't suit everyone. Each to their own - and each to their own opinion.

I take it there are no Portuguese shysters, football supporters, never eat fast or convenience foods and never partake in anything violent - must be a nice world these ex-pats live in.

It is a nice part of Portugal, Sue. They did thorough researching and found what they wanted.bruce wrote:I am proud to be British and do not have a fish and chips, football and fighting mentality! I'll be out soon for those mince pies and canapes tbst you'll be making from tbe local produce. Sorry I did buy asda extra special box mince pies but I will be going to intermarche and stocking up on fRiday so I am buying local with most of my food. I could not afford to buy much of our furniture and small electrics, especially TV's as they are way too expensive. The area needs to reduce costs on that sort of thing as I certainly would have bought locally. As for installing our TV dish I was recommended an English guy who seems to be OK. I am sure the recommendations didn't come just because he is a Brit.EMM wrote:Not just one xpat and not just me.

Re: UK TV Abroad
Prices for electrical goods, Tv etc are not always that much more ( if at all ) than the UK.
We recently bought a new flat screen TV for a similar price to that of the UK, we also saw Delta coffee makers actually less than in the UK.
On each occasion these were " special offers " which most of the bigger stores have on a reglar basis.
We were very tempted to buy a new Bosch washing machine as it was significantly lower in price than the UK, albeit on offer for a short time.

We looked time and time again. We bought 32" for just under £200 and a which after cash back which brings it down to about £320 add on top delivery I guess you are looking at another £60 for the 3 TV's. We had to buy all the kitchen appliances in CVO and that was about €3000 which is way more than the UK. We were quoted €499 for a combi microwave but paid less than £100 here. Glad you got your bargains but it has not been our experience.EMM wrote:Prices for electrical goods, Tv etc are not always that much more ( if at all ) than the UK.

It loks like you were still asleep at 05.39
TV cost more after cash back than before?
Bought your electrical goods in CVO!! Why not look further afield - Algarve shopping centre, Portimao etc. ?
Paid €499 for a combi microwave/oven? We bought a 800w microwave with 1000w grill for less than €60 at Makro and Wortens have similar prices. Both deliver free of charge.

Re: UK TV Abroad
The " badge " on the front of your washing machine ( or most domestic equipment ) means very little these days.
Virtually nothing is made in the UK, that great patriot Dyson closed down his UK maufacturing operation and moved it to malaysia.
If it is not made in China, then it probably comes from eastern europe.

I thought I had put 40" Sony was £320, opps! re microwave I could have had a grill one for a lot less but I wanted a combination which is much more expensive. We did try Wortens, Radio Popular, Makro and supermarkets. It was the kitchen fitter that said 499.roy4eyes wrote:It loks like you were still asleep at 05.39![]()
