Recycling

Post by Mike Banks »

Yesterday we were out for a meal with some friends who are also regular Carvoeiro visitors, and we were talking about recycling. We noted that there are numerous recycling points in Carvoeiro and the surrounding areas, but none of us could recall ever seeing a recycling plant/depot on our travels. Does anyone on the forum know what happens to the things which we put in the local recycling bins?

There is probably a site just off the motorway where all the stuff is dropped off and sorted, it then goes to China where the plastic is turned into telephones, glass into T.Vs, tins into cars and aluminium into aeroplanes. Simples !

the recycling in Portugal would hardly fill you with confidence. the signage is poor in the extreme. rubbish is included. bottles are frequently left in plastic bags both in the chute and also outside it on the footpath. I was 'lucky' enough to observe the collection few months ago from the out road. lorry with large lifting crane lifts the whole recycling container out of the ground (it was the paper one, stuffed with cardboard as usual) and starts to violently shake it around in mid air. nothing happened so he then started banging it against the sides of the lorry to dislodge the contents, in the meantime the other worker is busy throwing everything on the footpath into the back of the lorry. unreal/

In our street ,we were all given different plastic sacks to recycle household items for collection on a Monday. One bag for plastics, one bag for glass; one bag for paper/card and one bag for food. The result? A big lorry arrives and the men just empty all the contents from the sacks into the back of the lorry into one big pile! :|

I rely upon people like Hub . . . I watch my neighbours to see what colour bin they put out and I follow suit. :P

It is, we would be waiting all day trying to second guess each other.
