I agree with your comment on the Chinese, and IMHO the one you went to was the least dire of all those in CVO.
If you want a local Chinese, head to Lagoa and try Jardim do Sul in the pedestrian precinct. Its not great, but just about fulfils that need for a Chinese meal.

I'm sure there must be a "good" Chinese somewhere in the Algarve, but its not close to CVO.

thanks for reply e-richard. did sort of suspect that the one we visited was the best of a poor lot.

there was (and hopefully still is) a suberb Chinese restaurant in Gale, just opposite Vila Gale hotel.

will stick to the Indian on restaurant hill in future (prefer it to the one over the beach)

In Old Town Albufeira jusr behind the sea front is a new large Chinese WOK restaurant, they offer a lunchtime buffet at E9.95 a little more at night.
Plus a WOK counter. We have been to these in London and they are excellent value.
We have not been there yet as it only opened the week before last.

The Chinese in Gale is no longer there.
Saw the new Chinese in Albufeira when we stopped for a beer on the way to Praia dos Pescadores for lunch, I really hope it's good won't be able to try it for a while as we have guests & they want to eat a la Portuguese. The oriental place just off the square (ZaZa's ?) raised our hopes for a while but unfortunately it's decended into serving the usual rubbish most of the Chinese restaurants seem to serve out here.

Given the large chinese community in the Algarve why is it that the quality of restaurants is average at best.
Could it be the clientele who have expectations that is must be cheap and not too exciting.
We once heard someone ask for gravy in an Albufeira chinese !!.

What would we give for a decent Thai in our part of the Algarve.

Many fo the better hotels now have chefs trained to Michelin standard using local produce and varaiations of portuguese dishes but 90% of the places most of us use always play safe with virtually the same menus.

It will be interesting to see how the new " Portuguese " restaurant ( rather than Portuguese tourist restaurant )in Carvoeiro does or will it have to revert to playing safe like most of the others.

The Chinese restaurant on Vilamoura marina, Zu Yi, is meant to be very good. There used to be a Thai in Praia da Rocha but don't know if it's still there?

got me curious now. where is this new Portuguese restaurant?

also on last two visits noticed that villa medici was giving full employment - though not to restaurant staff. visited twice on previous visits and the food was good ( but felt it was tad expensive for an Italian) is it going to re-open this year?

Villa Medici (well, in all but name) has moved next door to Primavera.

@fmm

Do you know what the plans are for the Villa Medici building? As we usually stay at the top of the hill, the Accordeao is our usual haunt. Also, would you know whether Jo is there again this year? He was in two minds about it last year.

I believe the owner of Villa Medici is going to do something with it. Last time I was over they were doing loads of repair work but who knows!

Job is still in Accordeo - so things haven't changed there!

We were in Albufeira Old Town the other night so thought we'd try the new Chinese restaurant. Downstairs a buffet style Chinese like the ones in the shopping malls so we took the glass lift up to the next floor, more of the same except you pick your raw ingredients hand them to the chef & watch while he cooks them - great. So we turned round & left. When oh when are we going to get a really good Chinese in the area.
