NEW info road tolls

Post by maccasa »

At last! some sense on the system - it starts april 15th and you need to get your electronic device (ED) from the post office (except thay are in short supply at the moment)

Thanks for that, pretty comprehensive and quite well written. The problem I see if how you pay on the way back to Faro when leaving?

That response from rental companies recommending that visitors use the N125 is not very helpful.

Here is a response from a car rental company in the North, where the system has been in operation since last October
Whenever they hire a car to someone they fill in the Hire Contract, with the
customers home address and send it to the "Via Verde" office, who, at the end of the car-hire rental period, are supposed to calculate the usage and bill the customer at their home address. In practice, the Via Verde office
are receiving hundreds if not thousands of these Contracts on a daily basis, from all the different car-hire companies operating in the region, and are doing nothing at all with them as they do not have the resources. So the holiday makers are not paying and will not be fined.
Instead of trying to (ab)use the N125, I think the Faro based rental companies should be helping the holidaymakers to make life hell for the Via Verde, and not inconvenient for the Holidaymakers.

We certainly will not change our habits and will still use the motorway to and from the airport.

We have seen reports elsewhere of transfer companies increasing their prices reflecting not only fuel but also now the tolls.
Any news from the local providers ??

Is there a way that a reader could be attached to the hire cars that the car hire companies could scan upon the return of the car. The hire company could then receive a percentage of this payment for collecting it.

I understand that the cars are returned at all hours but the percentage payment should cover this.

I am not technically minded so please be gentle with your replies. ha ha

That is quite possible if the car rental co had a suitable scanner which could be integrated with the authorities system - so basically it wont happen!

One problem with this - if you have an all inclusive rental the car may not be checked back in - you just lock the keys in the car, and they collect when convenient for them. So, checking each car on return would add extra costs.

The best way to sort the problem with rented cars is to deduct the price from the tolls from your deposit. That's the easiest way to do it. Then they could send you a receipt to your home address.

Assuming the camera system updates the database in realtime (or close) then I still think the simplest solution would be to pay at the airport by giving the registration number of the hire vehicle.

That's one of the solutions. The database is updated in realtime (supposedly) and you can pay up to 5 working days on any CTT (portuguese post office) branch.

Trouble is, the CTT at the airport doesn't open until 9am, so if you have an early flight you're stuffed.

how about advance payment ? In Ireland there is only one non booth toll road with 3 methods of payment.

direct from your credit card by pre-registering.

up to 8pm the following day at any payzone outlet (thousands). you just inform the assistant of the car reg and pay the toll(s)

you can also do this in advance of your journey(s) by same method ie if you used the motorway that morning and went to a payzone the next day and pay for two (or more)journeys which can be for anytime in the future. (website states credit never expires until used)

so you hire at the airport. and pay the next day in ctt.

if you use the motorway during your stay , pay in the ctt.

and on the morning of your departure pay the ctt the exact same amount as the first payment and join and leave the motorway at same point.

do the Portugese authorites really really think that tourists are going to go to all this trouble when they are on holiday? or that they will hire out one of those verde via thingys? NOT A CHANCE!
