Bar Reviews

Post by Sandy »

I think we would have a separate section in the Forum covering bar reviews.
We all have our favourites.
My recommendation would be to visit Havana Bar for their happy hour cocktails, and after dinner call in at Hemmingways for a bica and brandy to aid the uphill walk home, hoping that the Jailhouse doesn't lure us in on the way past.

Without a doubt Bar Talvez is our first choice , the owners always make you feel welcome and a nice ambience.( music and no TV,s )

Emprivisto for our last drink ( coffee and port ). Too many brits in Hemingways and too many TV,s

If going back via Monte Carvoeiro , the Jazz bar.

Havana Bar always a good stop for pre-dinner cocktails.
Round Up Saloon is our favourite for after-dinner.
Others - O Barco for a couple of chill out drinks whilst on the beach.
Bar Charly for pre-dinner or whilst there's some music on the stage.
Monte CVO - Luis's Cocktail Garden

I've always found the music very intrusive and so loud a normal conversation is impossible. But, there's always Rachel to look at! :P

Accordeo (top of restaurant hill) is my local and definitely my favourite. Best cocktails in town - the only place that can do a proper margarita 8)

No karaoke, Johnny sings twice a week in the summer, music and sport but nothing intrusive and good table service.

EMM,
I take it you dont mind paying a bit more than the local Portuguese people in Improvisto as they operate a dual pricing policy and have the same number of TV's as Hemingways

Harry's Bar for Gary and I lunch times and most evenings. Ida does great sandwiches, really full and plentiful. Hemmingway’s en’route to our apartment when coming off the beach of an afternoon. Inside Bar for cocktails, can be expensive but cocktails are great and we go when happy hour is on.
Oh roll on June for my first visit. Gary is off doing a spot of photography with a Danish pal in April (supposedly)

Always a pleasure in that bar - had a great Canadian singer there in 2009 (he would play anything - including an obscure song from Harry Chapin called 30000 pounds of bananas) on request and a lovely female vocalist. Didn't use the downstairs club that year which was a bit of a shame - only had the acts in the top bar. The only trouble is that apparently the tuneless wailings from karaoke in Luis's bar drowns out the good music on a Sunday - I will see for real in July!

Renate is a great host as well - always has a smile on his face.

We've taken to using Boa Vida on restaurant hill (word of caution though, Thursdays are post-netball drinks!), decent prices for a generous glass of wine. There was a Black and White party with 80s music at the Jazz a few weeks ago which was great, all ages and nationalities until well past 4am

Emprevisto may have the same nunber of TV as Hemingways but you do not get the expat regulars tutting into their beers when your converstaion interupts their TV viewing.
Emprevisto is no more expensive than anywhere else and if it does have a dual pricing policy so what, can you live on 500 euros/month.

I suppose that's why variety is the spice of life, some people like their sport, other people like to hear themselves talk.
I have to say though there always seems to be plenty of people in Imprivisto watching the sport.

You really are a blond eh G :   Now what does this Danish "pal" look like and what kind of "photography" are they in to?

To test him out I think you should as him if he is familiar with these photography terms, bare bulb, sandwiching, testshots, resampling, shooting, smear, subordinate object, enlargement, enlarger, ring flash, gels, sensitized, slide, red eye, headshot, low key, speed, exposure, viewpoint, mask, monopod, mount, multiple flash, retouch, open up, overexpose, extension tubes, release, shooting distance, saturation, stain and washing agent, oh and don't forget to ask him about a lateral chromatic abberation

If you only had 500 euros/month why would you be spending it on alcohol?

You been reading the menu on your camera again Stevie - can't beat sensitized gels on your bare bulbs whilst overexposing your ring flash eh!
