Quad bike import/usage?

Post by MALLYMAL »

Hi
Don't live in CVO, but based in UK, and have holiday home. As we get older, we envisage spending more & more time here.... and therefore spending silly amounts on car rental.

So here's the plan... use public transport to get from faro, then have some kinda runabout for use whilst here.

In fact for tripping to the beach, getting a few groceries from Pingo, we don't even need a car, we need a.......

By the way, I'k talking legal on road use here.... So apparently these are a new class of EU vehicle - like a quad bike.

Here are some options - anyone any thoughts/experience of.........

Option 1) As a UK driver, I drive one over and have it in Portugal for no more than the allowed 180 days per year (on GB plates, insurance etc) then have to drive it home at the end of the season

Option 2) Bring one over and go through the whole importation/matriculation business.... but I'm guessing that ridiculuosly expensive (and may not even be allowed for non portugal resident)

Option 3) As option 1, but keep it in the garage all year round and keep quiet about it!!!!!

Thanks guys & girls...

I think that they sell these in Angel Pilot (big boat and jet ski shop) in Parchal

They also rent them:

I think I saw one of these at the BLIP exhibition last year. The BLIP's held every year in Portimao, usually in October.
Tell me where on earth do you put the shopping?

have you priced them up in PT as i have seen several floating around in Silves every time we are over there so may be available to buy. wouldn't fancy driving one all the way from UK to PT - would be OK in Spain/PT but the thought of driving up the M5/M6 and either freezing to death or drowning doesn't fill me with enthusiasm (don't like motor bikes either!)

They have quad bikes in Makro by the Algarve shopping centre- havent seen this sort of dune buggy type - more the 4 wheel motorcycle - but they are quite cheap as I recall - €1300 + IVA but I dont know if there is any extra tax on them. Often thought of one myself, but they dont seem to have many with a double seat.

I would suggest you buy one out there, my dad bought one from a shop / showroom in Messines, near Silves, good prices and a fantastic way to get around, especially on the dirt tracks down to some of the beaches.
