The Square
Re: The Square
Unfortunately not everyone can make it up the hill to Algar Seco EMM! and I still say the town looks like a pinball machine and will always be in the repair mode, the black bollards on restaurant hill were more in keeping with the surroundings, I think the whole scheme is a mess and a distinct waste of money, I've said it before, Oasis are the only benefactors.EMM wrote:We were shown the petition that a certain group of business is getting up to turn the clock back to where it was 2 years ago.
One of the main complaints is the loss of a 100 parking spaces, they forget to say that over 90 new ones have been created at Algar Seco.
Yesterday afternoon almost all of the new seats in the square were occupied with vistors enjoying the sun.
I suppose they could aways sit on the car roofs if this group get its way.

Re: The Square
I agree LJ - we were there last year shortly after it had finished (for the summer by th elooks of things - they still hadn't completed the new showers and toilets by then) and I thought it was a vast improvement - so much cleaner and seemed bigger - even with the cows (or bears or whatever!). The old square looked tired and dirty!Lesley Jean wrote:Well lets hope they don't get anyone to listen to them, the new square is such an improvement, I agree the traffic route is silly and needs looking at but the rest is lovely, it has given the square a cleaner image and as you say there are lots of places to sit down and enjoy watching the world go by. The café's/restaurants on the square look so much better now as well.
Re: The Square
Now! Now! laser, calm down lad, that's not like you. Anyway how many disabled spaces are there on the hill, c'mon speak up, half of them are at the top of the hill anyway, how sensible is that? The whole scheme is crapp, and in years to come you'll say "that scouse fella Pato was right it is a mess, and just think, me, Rich and his mate Bruce, thought he was an idiot."laserblazer wrote:If the bl**dy bar owners on restaurant hill didn't park their vans in the disabled parking spaces it would help
Just because you and your friends like stting in that place Metabixo, or whatever it's called, having a giggle and a laugh watching the traffic confusion and bollards being knocked over, the old and disabled struggling up restaurant hill, doesn't make it right. It's not funny being a wrinkly, I know.
Re: The Square
Pato however bad you mat think CVO is you should go to Albufeira, Alvor, LAgos, Luz etc where you will have to park miles away from the centre of activity.
THe famous bollards can now be found all over the Algarve as the car is moved out of town/village centres.
The problem in CVO is not the square or lost parking spaces but the lack of a " free shuttle " from the top of the village?parking areas down to the square.( Albufeira has a very very expensive escalator linking the parking to the old town)
Now " Business Owners " fund a shuttle and maybe you will see your lost cutomers return.

Re: The Square
I've got it:
They should totally gut the whole of Carvoeiro.
Build a flyover from the start of the in road to Algar Seco for access to the East.
Build another flyover above that directly to Monte Carvoeiro for access to the West.
Knock down all the buldings between in and out road (who needs Imprevisto or Hemingways ?) and convert it into a dual carriageway with even wider pavements.
Flatten the entire Restaurant hill so that its a wide boulevarde with weevil-free palms, plenty of parking, no incline and lots of restaurants, with 3 meter wide pavements.
The "Square" can then be 100% pedestrianised with rows of burger joints, beer tents and tatoo parlours.
... and then Carvoeiro can compete with Praia da Rocha as a "total tourist resort"

But those 'unattractive' stainless steel looking posts?? Has to be something more in keeping please??

Re: The Square
THere is a letter from Sian Hughes Roberts in this weekas Portugal news representing the views of the " luddite " groups who ( for whatever reason, I of course do not suggest that they have their own commercial reason for doing so ) who wish to return the village to the grey car park it was 2 years ago.
A new carvoerio with a devloping cafe culture is there for anyone to see.
Change is necessary and as the saying goes " Adapt or Die " as true in business as in every other way of life.

Re: The Square
What's the latest count on toppled posts, anyone know?, or even partially toppled posts will suffice, I need the information for my toppled post statistic booklet.
Re: The Square
Just one when we were there Pato (came home wed)
mind you there was a distinct lack of traffic at the time, so i would expect there will be a lot more this week. I've a friend out at the moment so i will get her to check for you.

Re: The Square
Now they have made the turns not so tight by slightly moving the posts that got knocked down on a regular basis this pastime is a thing of the past.
I drive through the village at least twice a day and have not seen any yet.
