Bengail Restaurants

Post by terry curran »

Hello,

I'm staying in Benagil at the end of June for a couple of weeks, although I've eaten in Carvoeiro a few times previously I've not been to Benagil. I was wondering if anyone had any information on what is in Benagil and what the restaurants are like.

thanks...

There is a great place to eat on the bend at the top of the hill. does excellent plaice and chips.

NB, The hill down to the beach is STEEP !!! and can get very busy at weekends which makes driving up or down " fun " at times as the Portuguese have different driving etiqueitte to us.

There is no such thing as giving way to the up hill car.

 You could not do any better than to try O'Algar which is about half way up the hill from the harbour.
Carlos runs the front of house with his sons and momma runs the kitchen.
Likable people and good Portuguese food.

 Brasserie Marina on the top road out of Benagil is run by a Dutch couple and has lovely food and great service, not cheap but very good value if you want a 'special' meal. tel - 282 342 736

Casa Velha do Pescador does the best fresh fish and Portuguese dishes, half way down the left side of the beach road, book tho' and be careful when ordering fresh fish sold by weight it can work out expensive, but it is well worth it. - tel 282 358 840

Bar O'Litoral is just above this restaurant and does the best plaice and chips in the area. - tel 282 358 840

Also close by to Benagil is Vale del Rei, there is a great Brasserie called Rosal just off the small roundabout by the tiny school, lovely with live music on a Friday evening. - tel 282 343 250

Also in Vale del Rei is Poppy's a lovely relaxed restaurant with good local food, well priced. - tel 282 343 061

This is my area and we love it, enjoy and have a great time.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned Casa Lamy (tel 282 359 839) on the RH side of the Benagil beach - run by great characters Aurora and her family (son is the chef). Not a huge menu but we've always had excellent fresh fish and there are hidden delights in the cake/dessert fridge (which they don't always publicise - you need to go inside and check them out) - delicious orange cake and yummy carob cake to mention but a couple. The stretch of coast from there to Rocha Brava or from Praia da Marinha to Benagil is some of the most spectacular in the area and makes for some of our favourite walks - starting or finishing at Casa Lamy for refreshments!
