look who ever got this debate off on the prices of beer in other countries has got the wrong end of the stick - this is about Portugal - the cost of living is about 33.3% of that in UK or Belhium or most northern European countries - so how come some bars charge exorbitant prices - they do it because they are paying higher rents and they have to cover their costs or else they are just greedy - but this recession will be a great leveller and those that cannot reduce their prices to local Portugese levels will find that people will shop around and visit those establishments that provide beers at a reasonable price - why come on holidays to Algarve for dear expensive beer - when you can have the same weather and beer for a lot less in good ol espana

I think that 3,- € for a pint what is the average amount charged in bars is not too much. We also have to consider that many bars have maintained the prices for some of few alreaedy whilst the price for a barrel of beer has increased constantly without having any effect on the beer price. The bars have to survive somehow!

I think Hemmi's charge €2.75 for a large beer. Of course inland it's still very inexpensive comparatively, good for our purse, not so good for our liver  . I'd rather pay more in Portugal than go to Spain.

Best price I have found recently was at Portimao Airport - €1.50 for a 50 cl. caneca.

When you are comparing prices also be aware that a caneca can be either 40 or 50 cl. - so a 40 cl. caneca at €3 is equivalent to € 3.40 per pint whereas a 50 cl. caneca is € 2.70 per pint.

I know that this will cause a few hackles to rise but the lack of true competition in CVO is the real problem,
In the bigger resorts like Albufeira happy hours, specials etc are common place.
In CVO the only pleace we have come across that offers anything comparable is Phoenix nights with their 2 for 1 specials.
( last summer 4 beers, 4 white wine, 2 vodka tonic was under 20 euros )
Are there any others ???

An Imperial pint is actually 56cl. so therefore a 40cl. @ €3 is equivalent to €4.20 a pint, and a 50cl. equates to €3.36.

However, it's worth noting that the bars that serve in metric sized glasses, always fill well above the marker line, so you always get at least 10% more.

Just another thought.
If all you want is John Smiths, Tetley's, Guinness and a 'Full English Brekkie', served by locals who can't or don't speak English, go to most of the traditional English holiday resorts.

Well - I didnt expect this lot when I started off asking about the prices! Forget elsewhere I want to know about our beautiful CVO and nearby. You can still buy a Super Bok in the supermarket for ~60p/litre so staying in is always a good alternative - what concerns me is that the drinking places have put the prices up yet the restaurants still only charge ~2.50 for a 0.5l. As is a common thread it does seem as though CVO is a bit cut-off so tends to be a litte higher.
My villa is finished in july so we will be making a very intense survey over the coming months and I shall report further.

This weeks resident reported that Tourist visitors are down by over 30% this year with Carvoeiro suffering as much as other destinations.
While the cost of a beer or meal will not be the decider when considering to holiday or not , it does have a major influence when we arrive.
Is the message getting across, we are back in 10 days and would like to go out a few times but whether we do or not does depend on our perception of value for money.

[quote="dodger"]Very interested in this thread as I and 11 other thirsty golfers arrive for 5 nights in mid june! :D

If youre playing golf at Gramacho or Pinta, then you have to go to Cafe Sesmarias commonly known as Rosas, you certainly wont pay anywhere near the prices quoted on here, bifanas good too, often frequented by parties of golfers and is a locals bar too. Give it a whirl, Rosa is a gem and has had the bar for hundreds of years. :)
