I have had to open a new topic because the previous one was locked and so I can reply to G's message.

I have to say that the current policy seems draconian. Interpreted strictly it means that any regular user who is not a sponsor or paying advertiser cannot draw attention to forthcoming events. This is clearly unreasonable and deprives residents and visitors alike of the opportunity to attend events.

I went to the last Beto appearance at the Anteak bar and it was a very good evening. I would not have been aware of it without the post in the events section. Although the bar put the advert in I am not sure who lost out by this. I am certainly aware that several people I know gained.

This has nothing to do with draconian, it is a simple case of preventing free advertising which has been rampant over the last few months.

It seems everyone has "events" they would like to publish, and the forum is probably the best place to increase the notority, but when it comes to what is essentially advertising it turns into a catch 22, because these free adverts make paid advertising on the webpage unattractive.

The only solution is to block event publications unless they are public venues or events published by paid advertisers in their forum subsection, which is the way it was intended in the first place.

What is the definition of public venues? Most events are at venues which are open to the general public. There is a risk here that a genuinely useful flow of information will be lost.

What sort of paid advertising relates to events? I don't recall much so it is obviously not very cost effective.

If this line of logic is followed, the monthly newsletter will need to be heavily edited to take out the free advertising it gives to all the establishments it mentions.

Would that not apply to the restaurant section too?
Having said that the restaurant section is just personal opinions about different places.

I don't envy Gambrinus's role at all, but what I simply don't understand is the times at which this rule applies. For example, things referring to restaurants etc are often removed, however this kind of post is extremely common - and is open advertising?

The restaurants reviews section is a completely different kettle of fish, as the name says, it is about reviews.

The events section was created to provide, as steve calles it, a generally useful flow of information. What it turned into, was a generally useless onslaught of dates when live acts where on at different bars.

Public venue events (and maybe that is not the best description, but I am at a loss for a better one at the moment), are events hosted on the square, the expo grounds like Fatacil, etc and fundraisers for a good cause.

What most certainly does not fall into that category, is Karaoke and live music at the local watering holes.

Look, if you are going to be pedantic and ask me draft a list of exactly what is and is not allowed, I am afraid I am going to have to politely decline and request that you accept my judgements.

Actually, the above list pretty much covers it (nothing like a morning coffee to get the old grey matter clicking)

wow what a tough call....you cant stop the flow of information if the poster really wants to get it on, what you can do is remove it as quickly as you can and so try and enforce a fee! have I got that correct?

What happens in the case of supplimentary posters, you know... "stripey caterpillars thread" "yes we had caterpillars in our yard or our cafe / bar, in fact it was last Sunday and we had ILZE performing in the bar like we do every Sunday at 3.00 p.m, with free softdrinks for kids, and I remember the caterpillars very well"

Gambrinus, I feel, is like the boy with his finger in the dyke, just let them post and stop a revenue stream or spend 24/7 trying to stop them and have no life! If this was a publicy funded forum then everybody gets to post, but its not is it :wink:

To try and be constructive, I can fully appreciate this point:

Given that many (most?) forum readers will tend to more frequently go direct to the forum (from a bookmark) and not via the main website front page, ads on the main website do not have the same immediacy for this audience.

Is there an opportunity for a "locked" section, similar to FAQ, where such announcements could be made - and a nominal fee paid ? Or perhaps some other creative idea that achieves the immediacy ?

I think these announcements are probably useful and that bar owners would probably be prepared to pay a (small) amount.



....... and, as someone who is allergic to karaoke I would then know where to avoid :wink:

However, as I agree in effect , there is another view.
This site is for passing on information in a helpful way.
Now when some expats start a new venture in CVO area, it is good for all to know about it.
We all would like to know whats on and where and where we can obtain certain services.
For some that are out there on permanent level, things may change, where circumstances mean, they have to try and get known for what they offer in whatever service it is. This is where us holiday makers and those that live there can see who and what is there and help them by using their services and thus allow them a modicum of income.
This can relate to restuarants, personal services in baking, babysitting, massage, butchers, smokeries, taxis, rentals and purchases etc etc.
In effect the places we visit and discuss re restuarants and shops and other services that are allowed on this site are as well businesses and are we not being somewhat hypicritical over the whole process.
I know businesses should pay to be on this site, but perhaps some leeway should be at the discretion of the powers that be and perhaps certain small businesses could pay in kind, sort off. This in a way is what the smokery did by providing an idea and a prize given. Is this not a good way to ofset the situation.
This is only my personal idea and not a condemnation or an agreement of the situation.

As one of the main "offenders" (although completely innocently as we did not realise we could not do it :oops: ), we would obviously like to continue to promote any event that we may hold at our restaurant, as at the end of the day we are only a small business trying to make a living . :)

We also feel that the people on this forum would like to be kept informed of what is happening in the village and to that end we would be more than happy to pay a small nomimal fee to continue to be able to advertise in a "locked" section as suggested by e-richard.

Forum technology does allow a certain amount of control - techincally, if a user abuses his forum rights and presist in breaking the rules, he or she can easily be blocked from further posting.

Borderline posts or "subliminal" advertising cannot be avoided, but we do reserve the right to intervene if it becomes repetitive to the point hat a user is clearly bending the rules.

I keep saying rules, but I would much rather call them guidelines and expect every user to apply some degree of common sense, but regrettably not everyone is willing or even capable of doing so.

Following up on the locked forum idea, it sounds like a really good solution, seeing that limitations can be imposed on who is allowed to write in a forum, a user could be granted writing priviliges after payment of a nominal annual fee.
Additionally, priviliges could be granted to a few locals who are in the know about public venue events to ensure maximum usability.
