Having heard about several people ,recently and in the past, having their passports and driving licences stolen. Is it OK to drive with photocopies?
Has anybody had any experience of being stopped with copies and if so how did the loverly GNR react?
I heard a story from someone who got stopped (for no reason),all the paperwork was correct ,but they got fined for not acknowledging his salute. Apparantly thats the law !!!!

Hi H.P
Don't know about the photocopies being ok with the police..but I always take photocopy of my passport on hol with me,since I was robbed in Lisbon.
But I must put in a kind word for the local bobbies in CVO. I was walking downhill from the little church (this Sept) and a GNR officer came out of the station opposite. He looked at me, gave me a charming smile and nodded in reply to my 'boa tarde'. Quite surprised me..nice

Miracles do happen! Was sitting completing the form for a new passport, when the phone rang. It was Portimao GNR - they had recovered BOTH bags. The only things we lost (except time, confidence and a few euros worth of things we had already replaced through necessity) was our phones and 15 euros! The thieves had dumped our bags at Mestre Maco when they found they couldn't use our cards, and left all the contents inside! Got the photos of the kids, my gran's lacy hanky and all the other sentimental items back! Some kind passer-by had seen then and handed them in. There are good folks out there!

We have just spent ten days in Carvoeiro, most of which was good but on our second day our vehicle was broken into. An Oakley bag was stolen along with various items of clothing but most importantly our Granddaughter's medical records were also in the bag. They contain every detail from the day she was born. Weight and height details and also dates of her innoculations etc. As you can imagine my daughter was very upset at the loss. This is a long shot but should anyone happen to come across these we would be very happy to get them back. Unlikely I know but it's worth a try. Here's hoping.
Thanks Misty. We did go to the police station in Carvoeiro to report it. We were on Ferragudo beach when it was broken into. I must say that the police were very helpful and pleasant. We realise now that where we had parked is a popular spot for thieves as the police knew exactly where we had left the car. Also we think there was a look-out (female) sitting at the top of the steps above the beach speaking to someone on a mobile phone. We believe the thief was disturbed when my husband went back to the vehicle to collect the pushchair and was probably warned by the girl at the top of the steps as she followed my husband to the car and drove off in the vehicle which was parked next to us. Ah well! C'est la vie.
I got stopped at a checkpoint on the way into CVO (not far from Intermarche). I was in our hire car with my son and the only document I had was my driving licence. Having just completed a beginners portuguese course I asked the officer if he spoke english in my best local accent! He called his colleague over who asked me for passport, driving licence and hire contract. He let me get away with just showing the driving licence and told me in future to carry my passport and the hire car contract.
Judging by the comments above, was I lucky?

Not sure if already posted but despite efforts by local parish council the Carvoeiro GNR post is doomed and will close soon. Cover will be provided from Lagoa.
