My family and I are visiting Carvoeiro this summer (August) and were wondering if Carvoeiro was as shown on http://www.waddybear.com/ ?

I'd say Carveoiro is perfect for a family holiday if that is what youre seeking,especially if you have little ones,the praia/bay is just right for them.Also plenty of good eating places nearby and to my mind it is as you see it in the pictures. Is it your first visit ?

I agree with Ellie Chantal, we have just returned from Carvoeiro and our family had a wonderful time

.......where are you staying....hotel or villa?

We are staying at the Carvoeiro Sol Hotel, which I understand is in the main square very close to the beach.
They have a pool for the kids but I would prefer the beach.
Do they have life guards at the beach?

Stayed at Carvoeiro Sol last summer and had a brill time, there are lifeguards at some of the beaches and a flag system - we watched the lifeguards have to call out a boat from Portimao to rescue two lads and then the lads had to hand over their credit cards - I guess to pay for the boat.

Anyway I am sure you have a great time, Carvoeiro is a lovely and magical place and one of only two in the world that I keep going back to.

Hi Chantal,

I am a regular visitor with 2 young children and you will have a fantastic holiday. the hotel is literally next to the beach and not forgetting the ice cream parlour so your children will be very happy.

Hi all,

I've seen on the web cam that the square is quite busy. Do you think it's safe generally to go from the Carvoeiro Sol to the Ice cream parlour?

Hi Chantal

You didn't say how old your children are and that might help answer the question.

The junction in behind the square on which you find the ice cream parlour is a meeting of (to count them at their worst) 5 roads and some wacky parking so to be honest even with older children to get to the icecream parlour from the Carvoeiro Sol they do have to have their wits about them but in all honesty that is sound advice anywhere!

You can just cross one road to get to a pedestranised bit where they can find the beach, some cafes that sell icecreams, etc. but not THE icecreams you have been hearing about

Hope that is useful - get back with the ages of your children and we can be a bit more specific.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for not putting the ages. My children are 9 and 11 so it seems from what you say that they can go to the Ice Cream Parlour easily if they are on the beach but a little bit harder form the Hotel.

Based on my experience with my own children, I would say that at 9 and 11 they could negotiate the whole junction, but would need to be reminded to look from every direction, watch out for mopeds and reversing delivery vehichles. In all honesty this is sound advice for everyone, but an excitable child on holiday at the age of yours are would need reminding everytime (totally assuming they are anything like mine were at that age they are now 14 and 11).

I think those pictures are a very good representation of Carvoiero.

They perhaps don't show the traffic density in the high season, but they do show what an attractive town this is and how different it is from the high rise resorts of Albufeira and Praia da Rocha.

Hi Chantal,

My fault as I failed to respond to that question in my original response.

I think they are an accurate reflection of Carvoeiro and shows that despite being a holiday resort it has retained a lot of charm and local character - except for the tourist train

The photo which includes the tourist train gives some indication to what I was trying to convey in your children visiting the Palacio do Cone Ice Cream Parlour which is just to the left of the picture and I am sure you can see why I mentioned the need for them to be reminded about road safety.
