Pego do Inferno, Tavira

Post by fmm »

The waterfall at Tavira is one of my favourite spots and I visit it every summer. I always get lost (signs are appalling) but love it when I eventually get there.

I had stupidly not thought about the fires in Tavira causing a problem for the waterfall, but when I got in the vicinity last week, the trees and earth were burnt black and the smell of burning was very strong. Eventually found the side road and saw a notice saying that the waterfall had been shut as the steps were unsafe.

When I got back and looked on the internet, it appears that the debris falling into the water and not allowing it to escape had caused the lake to become stagnant very quickly, as well as all the wooden steps no longer being usable.

If this is so (and I have no reason to doubt it) then it is really sad as the waterfall was a lovely place to visit.

I cannot see how the town can fund the work to get it up and running again - they did not charge visitors to visit it before, so it was not making any money - and there were no food or retail concessions there either to bring any money in.

Has anyone heard anything?

It had been closed a few months before the fires, due I think to some safety issues.

As far as I'm aware there are no plans, money or indeed inclination to open it, which is a shame as it did attract a large number of visitors.

One of the charms of the (Eastern) Algarve is its simplicity but that can be a double edged sword when it becomes lethargy and allows some very interesting and attractive sites to fall into disrepair.

I heard that the local council wasn't too keen on promoting it because of the increase in vandalism and car thefts
