Intersting point....

One way to explain it could be logistics...

As the farm land is over built, it is a longer trip from the farm to the market
(that causes more traffic, and that annoys tourists on their way to play golf)

Then there is the problem of storage....,.veggies are only fresh for one day, and then you have to re-stock the next day (leading to more traffic and that annoys the tourists on thier way to play golf).

Put that together with the seasonal influx of tourists, and the only way out is canned veggies......

Besides, as one poster put it....

well if you want fresh veg. at the moment it will cost you more than usual, Portugal's having one of the worst droughts for the last years, farmers can't keep up, water reserves are at their worst low, but amazingly they manage to get water to keep the golf courses nice and green

so if you want fresh veg. you can't have water on your swiming pool or a nice lovely green grass on the golf courses......

golf course slaggers/haters reappear everytime water issues are raised. looks like swimming pools too are on the aiming horizon of their sights.

But don't you understand Open Mind....how desperate the water shortage is for farmers..not only for veg growing but keeping their animals watered as well?
It often seems 'out of sight out of mind'....Im not slagging off golfers but you can't have it all ways....
mother nature has a habit of kicking us up the ass..without blessed water we don't survive....nothing living will..
what comes first....beautiful lush lawns of the golf course...or the food we eat?

I'm afraid I can't see any good reason to serve canned vegetables.
I wouldn't impose them on any dinner guests of mine and I certainly don't expect to pay a fortune for a can to be opened by a trained chef!

hey Sandy the only good reason is there's NO fresh veg, like Ellie said 'mother nature has a habit of kicking us up the ass..without blessed water we don't survive....nothing living will.. '

i also don't agree paying a fortune for tinned veg, that's why when i'm in carvoeiro i never eat on expensive restaurants.

but then people in portugal can't please everyone, if the golf courses weren't green then ''open mind or Swithering '' would come and moan here that the veg in restaurants are fresh but the grass is not green on the golf course, or the swiming pool is empty

Whats wrong with some tin veg? If the situations as bad as it is and from my auntie it seems that way,you have to make the best of a situation.Theres often just as much vitamins in tinned goods,sometimes more isnt there?

The topic of droughts has come up before, and now, as then, I see a huge disconnect between water and it's relationship to day to day living, on some peoples part.

They seem to think that water is something that is just there and the lack of water is something that doesn't have any effect on them personaly.

Ah, but it does....and the shortage of fresh veggies is just the tip of the iceburg lettuce, so to speak.
