In the past it was the case that flights tended to come down nearer the departure time and that bargains could be had.
Unfortunately that has not been the case for many years and with most airlines its best to book far in advance for the best rates,
however, friends of mine have booked summer flights (august) with Monarch for the past two years and they did come down slightly around June time.

You may however have to look at or Easyjet you want something a bit cheaper than Monarch , but you will still have to book far in advance.
There is no such thing as cheap flights anymore

Just looked at easy jet and they are quoting 1,290. More than the monarch flights!!!! What am I not getting right here!!!!!!!!!!

Just looked now fly from Liverpool on the 5th £55.99 back on the 12th £157.99 is that over the top,?

I've just checked liverpool to faro on the 5th and its £96.99 out and £147.99 back. In one day i cant believe they are changing their prices. What can i be doing wrong or is this price daily change standard practice with EasyJet

Easyjet and Ryanair prices dont come down. The cheapest they ever are, is on the day they are released, then as the various blocks are sold, get progressively more expensive.
That is the business model.
Once they are 90% sold, the prices go skyhigh.....and they dont care if they sell or not!

On the other hand...I just booked 2 Ryanair flights back to Faro from Stansted in January for £14:99 each....and no surcharges except the £12 "administration charge"

Ryanair release their seat in very large blocks, available now and for the past few weeks up to end of October 2013. Can only speak about Dublin flights but a few relative cheapies still available in July and August ie no taxes and return flights of approx €200 per person all charges included, and that is peak high season.

Easyjet release their flights on a rolling basis and from Belfast anyway are now up to 7th September. If they are the same in UK and your dates are flexible, then in all probability you will get a reasonable price on seats after 7th September, but you will have to be in early for the cheapest ones.

You should log on to all airlines sites and register for email alerts. Also try skyscanner.net and skypicker.com. (just now skyscanner found flights from liverpool to faro return 5th dec /12th dec for £45.65 total per person.)

They do release the schedule a lot earlier these days to encourage people to book early. I have just booked for Sept/Oct next year - Monarch from Gatwick at £175 pp. By April next year, these fares will be over £200 pp - and they will only increase as we get closer to September.

Ryanair's a pain. Half term next year is 25/10 - 4/11. The outbound flights are available but not the return in November. Presumably, when they are, the outbound flight will be sky high.

Our accommodation is really good value this year at £350 per week in August but as I've said earlier, the airlines are just raping us all in the holiday's. they count on summer bookings and guess what, we will book even at high prices. Suckers we are!!!!!
