Good explanation FMM.
On a recent trip from LGW to FAO, one of our party, who had already on-line checked in, dropped out at the very last minute. While the rest of us were sitting at the gate at LGW, his name came on the tannoy requesting Ron to step forward. I also had a on-line check-in, but my name was not mentioned. They obviously had record of Ron's check-in, but not his scanned presence at Security, so this obviously proves your point, but shows that the gate staff were double checking or didn't trust it
On the other hand
As it happens, on the return leg of the above trip, the Faro staff at the gate made an announcement calling ALL on-line checkin names to the counter prior to boarding so I could advise them of his no-show.
But I have not heard this every time, so the advice to present yourself at the gate early is wise.

Easyjet are splitting their Gatwick departures between the North and South terminals since the takeover of GB Airways.
Looks like all the ex-GB airways flights with a number 8 at the start of the Easyjet flight number will be moved to the north terminal, which is where GB flew from.
So depending on your flight numbers, you could fly out of one terminal, and back into the other.
That should cause some confusion....still they have that mono-rail thing running between the terminals.
