Which is better the traditional fully enclosed fire place or a free standing
stove.
The former does not seem to give out much radient heat but it does warm up the covering brick work and hold the heat during prolonged use.
Would a free standing would burning stove " give out more heat ".
Yes we know what looks better but as it it the cooler months when we intend living in the algarve ( warmer than UK ) and as we found this year when we came over you do need something on those chilly nights.

Wood burning free standing stoves give out loads of heat, even the smaller ones and in my opinion are much better than a built in fireplace. All the heat seems to just go up the chimney and kicks out no heat whatsoever. I was freezing the first winter here with a built in fireplace and sat wrapped up in my duvet right against the door whilst it just burnt up hundreds of logs.
