Again I must admit that this posting is getting further away from the heading, but I would like to record my agreement with Maddi's reply to the usa posting. Who knows, it may be a wind up, but I for one missed the joke. I was enjoying reading through the postings, until this idiot chipped in. I know maddi (Obviously Steens minder) sorted him out with his reply, but with the amount of people logging on to this site, there will be some scars left. By the way, a very close runner up in the "bad posting" league has got to be in the "Property Owners Forum." I am quite amazed that anyone has the cheek to send this in. Again Peter(Obviously Maddi's second in command) has responded, but with these postings on record, the damage has already been done.

and add that I don't feel able to police the Property Owners Forum not actually being one myself

Have to admit gate grashing it once

but feel unable to pursue my intolerance to intolerance on it

Heini (and anyone else from Canada), please take no notice of usa and keep coming over for the winter months! It's you guys that keep this place going through Jan, Feb and March. I think the people who do all the "tourist" complaining don't have a business to run. I do and am of the opinion that there is enough space for everyone and you're all welcome, as long as you behave properly!!!!

Have taken note of the comments about it getting expensive.Am going to carvoeiro for the first time in cple of weeks but last went to Portugal about 9 years ago..when it was very very cheap to eat out ..
Over the years I would expect things to go up due to inflation etc...
I see comments about wine in restaurants being 7.00 -8.00 euros...
I would just like to say that living in London it is very rare that you can go to a restaurant and pick up a bottle of wine for £6 or a beer for £2 so...that will do us nicely...!!!!

And I am SURE that the service will be 10 times better!!!!

Although we should be promoting Carvoeiro as much as possible on this forum, the local bar and restaurant owners (no, not all of them) do not make our life very easy. Higher prices, lower quality and sometimes a distinct "we-are-something-better" attitude are very frustrating at times.

Therefore I would like to suggest, that you take a time out when you are visiting Carvoeiro and move away from the coastal regions. You do not even have to go far inland to find good quality portuguese cuisine at affordable prices. Silves, Loulé, Messines, Monchique, all no further than a 45 minute car ride have retained a lot more tradition and are a pleasant alternative to the neon cities along the coastline.

Jeff, you have no reason to be embarressed the second time, Steen was commenting with "inside knowledge" and everything you said was bang on.

Thanks Leigh and Gambrinus for getting us back on track. There is still a debate to be had about this and lots of other people out there with views I think the original poster would be interested in (and I certainly would).

Like you commented Leigh, it is all relative.

I suspect the regulars will always be there, although the "once a year, worked overtime, saved hard and went without" holidaymaker from a less expensive part of the UK would not be as encouraged to return a following year as I was when I went as a single mum doing it all on an incredibly tight budget in 1990 - the reasonable (cheap) costs in resort at that time certainly impacted on my decision to return and so I have and as time has gone on with more and more disposable income and therefore, increased spending in resort ( sort of the Student Bank Account Principle).

What a shame that a reasonable question is distorted into a cross between a whinge and a slanging match. We have visited Carvoeiro for many years as the children have been growing up. Doubtless prices have increased over that time - but that doesn't mean that you are being ripped off. Best thing is to check the menus before ordering, so that you don't get a nasty suprise when the bill comes - always look at the Menu Touristicos - we used these a lot when the children were younger and had one main course - and two plates and two puds, the restaurant owners were always very obliging. Also think about how many times the kids have a pit stop - money slips away on ice creams and cold drinks at an alarming rate.

Just love these posts - you keep on saying it like it is Maddie (this forum has nothing on the catty posts that my Sindy Yahoo group gets up to - at least the spats here are over and done with - theirs simmer on for weeks LOL. Anway back to the topic - hope someone can answer this before we leave for our favorite place tomorrow morning - are there still any reasonable places to eat in Carvoeiro. Because we have 4 kids we are only going to hire a car for 3 days each of the weeks we are there, so we are going to spend the rest of our time in the town -eating and drinking (is the restaurant on the beach still going??) - is there anywhere that you guys can recommend to help us eat reasonably but at the same time enjoying local grub! Or at least perhaps some places that perhaps we should definitely avoid. Thanks again you guys

Liz PS where do you hang out - wouldn't it be great to meet - Listen out for me yelling Jadzia - that's my daughters name!!

Jadzia - if you're staying anywhere near Vila Nova Resort.. and even if you're not.. I thoroughly recommend an outing to their restaurant for an exceptionally good value evening meal, imaginative menu, friendly staff, and user-friendly bill at the end of the evening. Have a wonderful holiday!
