do yu live in UK? if you want to be ripped off then UK is the place. Even if prices have risen since the euro. it is still a cheaper and better holiday for us in Carvoeiro especially because it is family friendly!! and we get service with a smile.

i live here too..the only thing that seem expensive is when i go into a foreign owned bar or rest.

carvoeiro is expensive, and sadly has become just a smaller version of albufeira.

From what I understand its not just foreign owned bars and restaurants that are expensive some of the local ones are very pricey 2.
The price of goods in intermarche is so expensive compared to modelo in silves or lidles

NOT only Carvoeiro - just returned from a week in Nerja (Spain) definitely much more expensive than when we were there last September with the £ not stretching as far. The days of a 'cheap' holiday have all but disappeared - probably due to the weak pound against the Euro.
(Definitely missed CVO - will be back there soon!!)

hi hp,

U dont say wot business u r in but if these people say that the Algarve is getting too expensive then I'd like to know which country in Southern Europe would be cheaper - certainly not Spain, France or Italy. The latest place to go it seems is Croatia but how long will that last if they join the EU?

I wouldnt worry too much maybe these people are having to cut back on their many long weekends and holidays 3 times a year in Carvoeiro?

If anything the Algarve and Portugal is becoming more popular - just wish we had visited your beautiful country before so much concrete was put down but it has created jobs so a double edged sword.

I have found since the introduction of the Euro, that costs have increased across all the member countries I have visited - HP I think you are right to be a little concerned as the joy of visiting places such as Carvoeiro has diminished when a cocktail bought in a bar costs as much (if not more than the UK) but the prices to purchase spirits in a cave are at least half those of the UK, it is that factor that makes people feel "ripped off".

Portugal has always been one of the more expensive southern european destinations as far as travel and accommodation is concerned but previously presented a saving in spending money.

Other euro countries are the same and I am aware that in some places there has been something of a backlash against it, in order to maintain long term growth rather short term profit.

There will always be many of us who will continue to holiday in your country and other southern european destinations - more often than not for a greater chance of guaranteed sunshine and the wonderful attitude the southern europeans have towards children.

Pame, I would be grateful if you could let me know where in the UK you live so I can avoid it. And I would also be grateful if you didn't tar the whole of the UK with your experience of being ripped off. It certainly isn't the case where I live.

Good reply Maddi...We were in Carvoeiro this last February for a month
and Yes, we did find prices to have increased considerable to the tune
of 20%. We found as soon as you leave the coast and travel inland
a bit, prices seem to drop. So maybe for those who are feeling the
pinch on pricey bars and restaurants simply reasses your priorities
and look elsewhere.
In one of the earlier posts someone mentioned their stay in Nerja
Spain, well we visited it a few years ago, and I must say that
Nerja as well as the rest of the Costa Del Sol does'nt hold a candle
to Carvoeiro or for that matter the rest of Portugal.
This is one American who will continue to consider Portugal his second
home. :)

P.S....My wife just reminded me that...If we don't go first class or
children surely will....

Hi Maddie,

Of course parts of UK are more expensive than the rest. I used to live 10 miles from Windsor, 6 miles from Henley-on-Thames - say no more. I visited friends last summer and was absolutely shocked at the cost of things!! Of course they weren't complaining about the value of their homes that had soared and if they were to come and live near me in the North they would have plenty of money in their pockets for holidays.

Having 2 children, I want to go on holiday to a child friendly place where I can take them into a bar or restaurant for drinks and meals and not be thrown out before 8pm - the UK is still anti children or they provide us with those horrendous theme pubs with playareas and maybe that is why we have the problem with drunk teenagers? If we do holiday in UK it is to a caravan in a beautiful part of Lancashire on the way to the Lakes only 40 mins up M6 from Lpool & Mcr (the Queen loves it too) but fortunately most people havent heard of it so whizz past it to the Lakes.

I'm beginning to form an opinion from the PR work that some of you "Brits" are doing that merry old England is not a very merry
place to vacation... :?

Hi Jeff,

Jeff if we could guarantee warm sunshine all summer then the British Isles is perfect we would just pack picnics instead - its when we get the unexpected freezing cold days in July/August which makes a lot of people book their holidays abroad. My parents have just got back from their first visit to Scotland and had a great time, great weather, food and drink very reasonable and of course the beautiful scenery. They were in Portugal in April when the weather was the worst they have ever known it, wearing jumpers, getting rained on and we were all sunning ourselves in UK for the driest period we had ever known

We visit Carvoeiro during the winter months and prices have crept up over the years, the exchange rate C$ vs. Euro aside. Take the "cover" for example. It used to be 100 - 150 esc. all incl. Now it is 1.50 to 1.75 Euro and some places charge extra for the olives or the pate. A liter of housewine used to be 700 esc. now its 7.50 to 8.00 Euro. Drinks are the same. I realize that a place like Smiler's has quite a bit of overhead, they have lots of staff and are in a prime location, so maybe its ok to pay for that. Around the corner at a pastelaria you can have your beer or Macieira for a lot less. What really makes me angry is when a place frequented by tourists and locals alike tries to charge you for a caneca when you only had a a small beer! We don't eat in Carvoeiro restaurants very often any more, preferring to have a meal outside of town for a reasonable price and also stop for a glass of 1.00 Euro vino in the countryside. By the way in Albufeira you can find cheaper beer and vinos than in Carvoeiro now, and right in the centre of town.
As for a slang word for the Euro:
In Germany the Euro (Oy-ro) is called the Teuro (toy-ro) "teuer" (toy-er) meaning "expensive".

Dear USA

That was a charming, well thought out, reasoned and logical arguement - NOT :!:

If your response does not bare direct relation to the subject in either offering arguement or support and is simply a personal attack based on ignorance and prejudice - I, for one, won't be welcoming you to this site, or my country and I would be grateful if you could avoid Carvoeiro at the times I am there.

I am sure that a great many people in the States would be very distressed to know you are making this kind of submission in their name :!:

Maddi

p.s. I am well aware of the irony - my post also bares little relation to the topic heading but is in direct response to the one previously posted - for those you know me - spitting feathers again :)
