hope those from uk might like to know that this is the slang term the portuguses use to describe the british..wonder why????
is it because they are now a nation as the bbc so describe...fat..or is it because they like roast beef..or hamburgers???
now what can we call the portuguese....ermmm.....i know

well from what i`ve learned is its deprived from roast beef and this relates to the redness as a lot of english(or so it seems) go to the sunny spots pale as hell and turn lobster(or roast beef in this case) red within a few days.Anonymous wrote:hope those from uk might like to know that this is the slang term the portuguses use to describe the british..wonder why????

But Ive ccmpletely forgotten what it is..anyone here know?
Do the Dutch have one Bleeker?
I only know:
with Americans its 'limey' (from when our sailors ate limes on board ship to prevent scurvy?

As far as I know calling the english "beefs" or "bifes" (as we say it) dates a while back from recent times. The name orginis come very simply from the Beefeaters - the guards in the Tower of London - white necks and tudor hats.
This was explained during the Euro2004 on tv and I was surprised because I'd assume that this was something made up recently - circa late 60's with the tourism boom.
