Lunatic staff at A Rede continued

Post by roy4eyes »

Get past the antics of the 'pullers' and the food and service are excellent. We went last night and after aperitifs and extensive couvert including marinated sardine fillets we paced our order and on ordering a wine at €20 were advised by Carlos to try their new 'reserva' house wine at €14 - he was correct in that it was excellent - and what a pleasant change not to be pushed into a more expensive wine ! After a large starter of mussels we ordered the house fillet and, on being warned that it was large, again took his advice to share it - melt in the mouth with unusual and delicious piripiri vegetables - and again he was correct insofaras the half portion was ample. Coffees and complimentary liqeurs - a bill of under € 70 - and they have two very happy clients who will not need to be 'pulled' in future !!

Always had excellent food and service here. The baked salmon with flaked almonds and roquefort sauce are to die for!

No one is questioning the quality of the the food served here or the service given, it is just that many people just don't like being accosted by the staff when just walking by the restaurant. That's one of the reasons I no longer go to Greece.

Agreed, we come to Carvoeiro because it doesnt have that horrible pushy vibe that lots of other resorts do. I always find it irritating walking past this place, we have eaten there and the food was good, just put off from going back by the juvenile behaviour.

We wouldnt consider ourselves humourless and I know there is some other places in Carvoeiro where people sit outside and greet passers-by but it is done in a friendly non-intrusive manner, at this restaurant it feels like they are making jokes at peoples expense.

When we visited CVO in mid-April, we tried A Rede for the first time in 3 years. NO cabaret or "hoiking". Nice, friendly service. I had the mussels to start, as recommended by a member here - very good, and tastier than similar dishes I've tried in France and Belgium - followed by the espetada - delicious but too substantial for me to finish. (An alternative to chips would have been nice, though I didn't ask what the accompaniment was.)

My companion was less impressed, and it did turn out to be the most expensive meal we had during the week's stay. House wine a bit much at €14 (I think), though well above average.

If we come back later in the year, I wouldn't rule it out, but I'm not so sure I'd go out of my way to rush back.

We also find the portions huge and so, if like us you do not have huge appetites, share each course - they are happy to do this.
The house wine at € 14 may seem expensive but is a 'Reserva' (selected wine) and not the usual vinho de mesa (table wine) and the same quality would cost as much, if not more, in other restaurants.

I was also put off for many years by the staff shouting across the road and vowed not to give them our trade. However, one dark night last November we ventured in due to the rain.

We have been back many times since and find the staff amongst the nicest and most entertaining in the area. Nothing is too much trouble and the food is good. I agree the portions are big but they have no issue if you wish to share The Sea Bass for 2 people at €25 is great value and delicious. The covers are great.

Dont let the antics put you off, they are not malicious or intended to cause offence, I think they just do not realise how irritating it can be on a daily basis!

Walked past yesterday on the other side of the road. Heard some pathetic attempt at humour and looked the guy in the eye and strode over purposefully towards him and he disappeared inside like a scalded cat! Great fun and highly recommended to see the reaction. I intend to do it every time I pass.
