Crise What Crise?
Re: Crise What Crise?
Why should we the Brits have to pay the increases, after all it's the Portuguese who are broke, how unfair can you get.

I would imagine it is an enforced two week unpaid holiday ...martin wrote:walking past the citroen showroom in messines, a notice is on the window saying they are shut for 2 weeks for their hols...and I thought cars sales were really down at the moment!!
As the showroom in Messines is part of garage in Portimao I suppose no one has heard of holiday relief or is it that can no one be bothered?

And you wait for all the tourists to start moaning how the restaurant prices have gone up - without thinking about the increase in electricity and restaurant taxes that the restaurant owners are going to have to pay. I reckon a 20 euro meai will be up to 25 next year easily - and the money will not be going to the restaurant owners ...Polli62 wrote:pato wrote:Why should we the Brits have to pay the increases, after all it's the Portuguese who are broke, how unfair can you get.agree there Pato, wait till our electricity & gas VAT goes up from 6% to 23% as proposed. Think I'm gonna disconnect my cooker & aircon units.
Re: Crise What Crise?
The increase in IVA on restaurant meals is very interesting when it was reduced on restaurant meals a few years ago to encourage tourism we never saw a reduction in price
perhaps more places will go back to having a budget Tourist menu.

Re: Crise What Crise?
the finance minister in ireland says he is monitoring the situation and if hotels, restaurants etc do not pass on the reduction he will review the cut in vat.Jaylay wrote:The increase in IVA on restaurant meals is very interesting when it was reduced on restaurant meals a few years ago to encourage tourism we never saw a reduction in price![]()

interesting that of the two countries in trouble it looks like portugal intends to increase vat on everything while in ireland the vat is certainly going to be increased but it being reduced on these labour intensive industries. hotels federation has advised their members to make the cuts in all areas that the reduction applies to.

correction: I previously stated that the new vat rate on these industries was 10% when in fact it has been reduced to 9%

Maybe that is because Ireland was deeper in the ***** than Portugal.
Each country had to negotiate its support package using whatever means that would be the most effective in reducing it deficit.
Time will tell which country comes out of recession first.

Remember Ireland had a direct loan from the UK, unlike any of the other sick Euro countries.

at 8% it was a bloody great deal, but its now reduced to 4.8% like all the other loans, saving irish taxpayers approx 800million per annum in interest.
portugal has a population of 10m+ and borrowed 80b
ireland has a population of 4m+ and borrowed 115b
so it should be a non runner, but my money is still on ireland to recover first, but it wont be for at least 5 years.

Re: Crise What Crise?
Wasn't a big fear with the Ireland situation the amount of UK money invested in Anglo Irish Bank?
