Tragic event Carvoeiro square
Re: Tragic event Carvoeiro square
I hope the GNR take appropriate to deal with this tragic incident, and publish photographs of those involved. The GNR need to get a grip in and around CVO to make the place safe for all residents and visitors alike.
Re: Tragic event Carvoeiro square
Poco Partido is the name of the estate and is as the GNR know the perpertrators of many of the break ins on ADM an Monte Servo live. It is beyond me why the GNR cannot stamp them out.

That's the place! By all accounts one of the ringleaders is a 16 year old boy, currently sporting bleached blond hair, who has spent an awful lot of time in prison (or the Portuguese juvenile equivalent) but only a few days at a time before he is back out on the streets causing bloody mayhem again!jonboy wrote:Poco Partido is the name of the estate and is as the GNR know the perpertrators of many of the break ins on ADM an Monte Servo live. Well let's hope they lock him up and throw away the key this time.Sharen Crane wrote:That's the place! Re: Tragic event Carvoeiro square
It will be interesting to see how many break-ins occur whilst he's locked up. I suggest the residents of ADM V de M and the other vulnerable estates pay for their own security police and deduct the cost of financing the project from their rates, if all owners and residents join together in Cvo and form a society of owners and residents they'll have much more say in the safety of the estates.
It's the sqeaky wheel that gets the oil and the bigger the squeak the faster and the more positive the response, in my opinion the GRN treat the whole problem as a joke and that the foreign owners are fair game to the local scallies, I've had dealings with them, the GRN over an incident in which I was personally involved and that's how I felt. The crime rate is de-valueing the properties in Cvo. I'm fed up with the situation when I have a potential let, informing the client of the dangers, "don't play in the pool unless the window shutters down" "Don't leave your handbag in view in the bedroom" " don't leave anything in the car" "don't do this, don't do that" I'm positive I've lost business because of that kind of security warning.
Take the mast situation on ADM, they, the residents and one resident in particular, would not sit back and accept the validity of the stupid project, they fought the camera over the issue and won, we should take that as an example and speak with one voice and give camera and the GRN a rough but justifiable ride. We need a rough tough lawyer to present the case and the horrendous crime rate figures to the camera and ask what they're going to do about it, as did the ADM in their particular fight for justice, and maybe we'll get somewhere. The local scallies treat the GRN as a joke, and unfortunately I have to agree with them.

Totally concur with your views and suggestions Pato but I would still urge you to take time and put your thoughts down in a mail to the Consul at the e mail address Polli62 gave us all. It is clear from just the people who frequent this forum that there is a big problem to solve and I agree a private security the hiring of a sharp lawyer are both very good suggestions - bith of which are something I would support 100% , but briefing the Consul with factual accounts of events will add weight to his cases when next meets with the Lagoa Camara.

Re: Tragic event Carvoeiro square
Is Carvoeiro the only place in The Algarve to be plagued with this problem?
If it is then the Consul might be compelled to make Carvoeiro a special case (I doubt it though) - if it is not (which I suspect is the case) how is he going to prioritise?
I have asked the question previously regarding alarms that have the attended/intervention service and have not had anybody - who has been burgled - claim they were let down by the security company. From that I must assume that those who have been burgled and may or may not have an alarm system - but not the attended/intervention service - are the victims of the criminal community. If my latter observation is correct - and taking Pato's point (private security) - will those whose properties are not partially or fully alarmed put their collective hands in their pockets and pay for private security?
I suspect that many will 'sit on their hands' and do nothing waiting for the authorities to intercede - in which case there will probably be many more incidents unless you all join forces and make your voices heard at the highest possible level. Somebody has to make the first proactive move and writing responses to this forum is not doing that. Get yourselves organised (offline) into a representative team - appoint a leader and get on with it.

No it isn't, it's happening all over the Algarve, you only have to read the archives of The Resident from mid 2009 to date to see the problems.shanagarry wrote:Is Carvoeiro the only place in The Algarve to be plagued with this problem?

Re: Tragic event Carvoeiro square
Reading the piece from last January - it suggested that some residents in Loule are 'working' with the GNR.
What are the residents of Carvoeiro doing - apart from writing to this forum - well it's time to get organised and get started - today

Re: Tragic event Carvoeiro square
Whilst everyone must have sympathy for the victim and his family reading some of the contributions to this thread one could get the impression that Carvoeiro has turned into the worst type of UK sink estate.
The truth is far from this, yes there are security problems in some mainly tourist based areas where owners may or may not have bothered to install modern security.
Any property left empty for 4 months of the year is a tempting target where ever it is.
On a scale of 1-10 Carvoeiro is a 4 compared to the 8-9 that a similar sized UK resort would score for anti social behaviour and risk of criminal actions, breakins car crime etc.
I believe that those who are making the most noise about this issue will also be the first to complain of falling holiday bookings and property prices and they will only have them selves to blame.
As Shanagarry says take responsibilty for your own circunstances do not pretend that writing to the consul or letters to the papers etc will have little if anyy effect.

It seems the police are taking this situation seriously, a police car is visual driving around the village in the early hours.
Re: Tragic event Carvoeiro square
Emm - I do take responsibility for my own actions - I pay someone to visit my property every day when I ma not there, I pay for a monitored alarm system with image capture and I pay rates to Lagoa. I have provided images of the burglars on two occasions to the GNR and they say that there is insufficient evidence to although they know who they are. Of course I care about the impact postings such as these has on future rentals - I do not rent my property but there is indisputable evidence that criminal activity in certain hotspots is on the increase. I hasten to add that I do not rely on third party data for my stats; I get mine from my neighbours and friends telling, quite regularly me when their properties were last broken into! There is no point hiding from the facts. Now what exactly do you suggest that I do to take more responsibility for my own actions - sit there with baseball bat or shooter waiting for the next one to happen - I can imagine the GNR would act very quickly if someone ended up with a bent head of busted kneecaps or worse?
I am all for asking the Consul to the raise the issue through official channels at his next meeting with Lagoa , getting affected parties to collectively lobby the authorities with hard facts, anything that helps. However to imply that I am not taking responsibility for my own actions especially when many owners have taken extra expensive precautions without any corresponding effort from the local lethargic police force is quite frankly insulting!!

Re: Tragic event Carvoeiro square
well said jono,it needs to be out there in the public domain so the people who live out there&have holiday homes are aware that there is a problem so that maybe we can do something about it or maybe the powers that be will do something about it.i cant see the point of burying our heads in the sand & hope the problem will go away because it wont.
Re: Tragic event Carvoeiro square
EMM, Carvoeiro is pretty well entirely a tourist area, there's not many of us here at all in the winter months.EMM wrote:

I mentioned in a post a while ago that I'd be hard pushed to name a friend that HASN'T been burgled, in the whole area, VDM, ADM, Boavista, Sesmarias, Monte Carvoeiro; it's difficult to name an area that's been left alone.
As many have said, the GNR are of little help, our burglary saw some credit cards stolen from (what we thought was a safe place) in our home, the nice thieves wandered down to Algarve shopping & tret themselves to €600 worth of nice things in Vobis, VISA were able to give us the exact time of transaction and Vobis has CCTV, but seemingly only for their own use, the GNR refused to look at the tapes, mumbling about data protection and a waste of time.
Most people we know have at least what you might call adequate security; alarms, high fences round the property perimeter, electric gates, barred windows etc but the stories continue; if you have a variety of 'gardeners' or pool men in the area and/ or especially if you have building or renovating work going on close by then you become a target.
Our own 'system' is to have a mix of good security, vigilance and full insurance cover, then we sit and cross our fingers.
