Volcanic Mess Continues

Post by TomUK »

All Thomson flights (nine of them) from UK to Madeira, Tenerife, Lanzarotte and Gran Canaria cancelled today. Monarch flights to and from Faro and Spanish resorts also cancelled (24 of them). Jet2 flights for Faro are operating to Lisbon and customers are being offered road transport to and from Faro whilst the ash cloud situation continues.

Can't help thinking that we are going to pay the price for this chaos and loss of airline income in the future, whether it's as tax payers or as passengers when the fares go up to claw back the lost monies.

Our Saturday flight from Manchester is looking increasingly doubtful (knew we should have had a week in Blackpool!).

We have some friends who have an apartment in carvoeiro and got right onto the
tarmac at Stansted Airport today, just about to board and were then told that the
flight was cancelled because of the ash cloud. There were other people on the
flight who had been cancelled 3 times in the last 5 days. I am afraid this is really
going to put people off if this continues for much longer.

I understand that Faro airport is operating normally for Easyjet. Ryanair is operating extra flights to and from Faro today.

Bristol flight left on time this morning.

Given that most flighst are 70% or more full where do all the people whose flighst are cancelled go ?

As has been suggested some must just give up on their holiday to Portugal/Spain etc.

A check on the Faro Airport website reveals that two Monarch flights from here (Manchester Airport) landed on time at Faro.

EasyJet and RyanAir also arrived/arriving from various UK airports.

Here's hoping for Saturday!

Weblink to Faro airport arrivals & departures.

I find it strange when some flights are allowed and others cancelled, could it be because of cabin crew not being in the right place.

If you Google search for 'faro airport' you'll get fuller arrivals/departures info in English (via the flightstats.com website).

Even has a tracker feature to track certain flights on an active map during their journey. Monarch 594 this afternoon for example (which incidentally, arrived about 30 minutes early). It gives the aircraft's current height/speed/distance travelled, ETA, etc. A bit anorakish maybe, but useful for confirming flights are happening in these uncertain days.

Don't worry cereza - forecast today predicts UK weather is set to get warmer next week. Typical, we endure chilly weather last couple of weeks and as soon as we head for the Algarve (tomorrow) it gets warmer back home - but we're going on holiday, so yippee!
