Walk TUESDAY 3 MARCH 2020 : BEYOND FUNCHO
Posted: Sun Feb 16, 2020 6:05 pm
This is the same walk that Geoff is doing on February 24. There was a lot of demand for that date, so this walk is for those who didn’t get a chance to go on Geoff’s walk, and anyone that wants to redo it; it is a spectacular walk.
As before, we will meet at the cafe to order lunch, if required, before 09h45. We will then drive to the Funcho (5km, 6mins) for the walk, and then drive back for beers and lunch.
The walk is on the other side of the Funcho, a lovely river walk, great countryside and a bit of a scramble up a bank. There is some tarmac early on, the amount depending on how high the river/reservoir water is, and thus how much of the track is submerged. It does contain one longish hill, not too steep. Depending on how close to the river we go, there is the risk that part of the trail is damp or muddy.
It is ESSENTIAL that you indicate below if you can come and if you want lunch. Thank you.
Degree of difficulty : Grade 3 Energetic
Duration just over 2 hours .
Start : 10h00 at Funcho...but coffee at cafe O Gralha at 09h30. We need to leave the cafe about 09h45.
GPS : O Gralha is : 37.2541673,-8.34523,312
Start of walk is : 37.2743665,-8.3140614,624
DIRECTIONS :
FOR THOSE HAVING COFFEE BEFORE AND / OR LUNCH AFTER
Drive from CVO to Silves, go over the bridge and turn right and follow the N124 for about 7 kms until you see a turning on the left signposted "Barragem do Arade 3 kms".......the signpost is in a small triangular traffic island, which has a large palm tree on it.
Drive in the direction of the Barragem for 1km when there is a cafe on the left ( A Rainha): turn right, signposted Canestros and Gregorios. Drive through both Canestros and Gregarios for 3kms then make a sharp left turn, almost doubling back on yourself.
Drive for 2kms until you come to a T junction at the top of the hill, turn right , drive through the village and the O Gralha is one of the last buildings on the left. Please park opposite.
FOR THOSE HAVING NEITHER COFFEE BEFORE NOR LUNCH AFTER
If you wish to neither have coffee nor lunch and meet at the start of the walk, then drive from CVO to Silves, go over the bridge and turn right and follow the N124 for about 14 kms , passing signs for Nora and Benaciate (on the right) and Torres/Corte (on your left). Watch out for the Restaurant O Guerreiro. It is easily missed. It's on the right, on a slight left-hand bend, GPS 37.247962, -8.3170429,605.
After passing the cafe, after 500m, look out for the sign " Vale de Fuzeiros and Amorosa" and turn left.
Drive through Amarosa and follow signs to " Passadeuos, Pedreiras, Vale de Fuzeiros".
Go through the hamlet of Pedreiras, ignore the turning on the left to Vale Fuzeiros. You then should shortly come to a bridge. Park by the picnic benches just before you get to the bridge.
Walking boots/stout trainers recommended and walking poles.
Usual caveats - all walks are at your own risk, and we do not walk if it is pouring with rain...no charge, of course...I will endeavour to put any cancellation note on this site by 08h30 on the day of the walk.
