Recce Walk no 115 : Meia Praia. Saturday 13 June 2015

We did a recce on this walk back in November 2013, but got a bit lost ! However, I now have a "map" of the proposed route, so want to try it again.

It ought to be between 2 and 2.5 hours and fairly flat , partly along the beach, then up to a trig point ( but it can't be a very high one) and back along a lavada.

Please indicate if you can come.

If it's wet, we won't be going.....nor if it's too hot!

Tel 282 380015 if you need more info, preferably between 0830/0930 and 1700/1900....but not before 10 June.

As usual, all at your own risk, and no charge....bring water, sunhats etc!

Start : 0930....Please note earlier start time

Directions:
From CVO, turn left on the N125 at Lagoa towards Portimao/Lagos.

At Odiaxere , turn left at the traffic lights opposite the Bayleaf indian Curry restaurant.
After about 50 yards take the left turn signed " Palmares Golfe" and" Meia Praia".
Follow this road for a mile or so, following any Golfe signs. On your left is then a turning flanked by 2 white columns, again signed Palmares Golfe.
Drive up the hill and after about half a mile, turn right signed " Lagos". Drive for about half a mile and follow Meia Praia sign on left and cross railway line, park in carpark by beach cafes.

Hope to see some intrepid explorers!

Last time we did this stretch, the beach was bereft of any unusual sites....do you mean the "sunworshippers" between Salgados and Pera get to Alvor as well?....in which case, I am sure we'll avert our eyes!

Rather a cool and cloudy day, but ideal for walking with a good group of 10, with Jan and Eileen a couple of newcomers.

We didn't spot any unusual sites along the beech, but perhaps it was too cold. We did get a lot of sand in our shoes though:

before crossing the causeway, complete with some lovely heather;

We were soon in unexplored territory , or un-previously-recce-ed territory anyway. We spotted the trig point ( or was it a white chimney?) and made one false start across a field that quickly turned to scrub , before finding a good track with great views;

All good things come to an end however, and we finished with rather a long walk back along the road, wondering if we could have cut throgh the golf course.

Anyway, a good walk, just under 2.5 hours....say 2 h 20m without the false trail, at 6.3miles. A nice coffee/beer awaited at the beech cafe.

A bit different from some of the other walks ; it will be added to the repertoire........though we never found the trig point nor the canal! Something for another day!

Many thanks to all who came.

The approximate trail was :

though we walked along the beech and cut the corner off at the end, going directly back to the beech.

I forgot to add the proposed " degree of difficulty"......in the absence of any hills ( one slope!) the hardest bit was walking on soft sand, so I reckon ( scale 1 to 5 ) it's a "1, Easy". Let me know if you think it merits any more.
