I hope I am allowed to put this email we received from North West Direct Freight. (If not please delete) We are using them to take some furniture to the Algarve this week, which they are picking up tomorrow. Their prices are excellent & they have always replied to our emails or contacted us by telephone if we needed to know anything. The goods are shipped by sea to Lisbon (approx 10days) & then picked up by a wagon for distribution. Just thought it maybe of interest to forum members.

Interesting - we are moving our home to Carvoeiro from the South Coast (UK) in the next 6 weeks (legals permitting) and have had prices from a number of companies based on recommendations from this forum and elsewhere. Our volume is 40m3

We have had similar prices from:

* Algarve Removals

* Direct Transport
* New Concept
* AIM
* Roy-Trevor
*Trans-Portugal

The post by Polli62 at €50 per cubic metre is around half of the serious prices we have received and while encouraging - I am 'suspicious'. Has anybody else used Ideal Living Portugal Lda? Using them would save me a lot of money - but what are the risks?

When I posted looking for recommendations/warnings - I heard some serious horror stories - I don't want to become one.

Shanagarry, They only ship every 3 to 4 weeks, obviously with a full container. The one our stuff is going on this Tuesday is full. I think the price they quoted us is for local pick up within Liverpool/Gtr Manchester area, as on their website it does say from £50 per cubic metre.
I have never used this company before , always used dls couriers from Almancil but decided to give them a go, they have answered every question we have asked either by email or phone.
I will let you know if everything went ok with our delivery but it will be mid may before I can do that.

We have used them to transport our furniture and boxes to Algarve. Really good service. The furniture was delivered directly to them and they collected our boxes. Everything arrived in perfect condition in Loule. We are definately going to use them again and the price is great.

Thanks for the feedback Aldo. I didn't really have any negative thoughts about this company, as said previously they have kept in contact with us for every query we have had.
Last September we had some items shippped over & we paid treble the price with another company per cubic metre that North West Direct Freight have quoted us this time to have items shipped.

Thanks for the feedback - but I see the 'problem'. Getting our stuff from West Sussex to the North West only for it to have to come back down this way would add significant cost - but I will ring them and ask anyway.

The average cost per cubic metre from those I have asked for prices is £95 - some + Vat/IVA some not. My preference at present is Trans-Portugal as they have taken the time to travel here (albeit only from London) to see and quantify and their references are impeccable.

We are thinking of using the company from Haddock in the summer to bring our daughters belongings back from University. Could it be the prices are lower as they ship the items from the Uk by sea unlike most companies who drive them all the way, this could also explain why they take a few days longer to get here.

One of the 'horror' stories I had told to me was a situation where the volume quoted for was a lot less than the actual. When the carrier had the people's household effects in his possession, he demanded another €1,150 and would not deliver until such time as they paid. Like me they had provided a detailed list (with measurements) of everything to be carried - but the carrier under quoted to get the business.

I have no desire to be put in that position and believe in being over cautious to avoid any animosity once they collect my stuff. So much so that one of the highly recommended companies has contacted me this morning and offered an additional 10% discount as he believes the others may have got it wrong!

I'm not necessarily looking for more discount (although it would be nice) - I'm keen to get to the right price - with the right company.

From the work I've done - the rate per cubic metre is €90 + IVA

I had an excellent reply today from North West and they explained their process. It makes no sense for me to transport all stuff from the South Coast all the way North for them to bring it back down here again en-route to Portugal and they agreed. I believe they are a bone fide company and I fully understand their method of operation - if I lived in the North West I would have no compunction using them.

€90 + IVA seems a good price, maybe because of your large meterage you are getting it cheaper. We have had variations for small loads between £120 to £153 per cubic metre. North West seem ok, the price is good, and as we live local to them ( within15miles) we will use them again for small loads if this load arrives with no problems.

Delighted your property has all arrived safe and sound.

As mentioned previously it made no sense for me to use Northwest as they would have had to move it from the South to the Northwest and then back down to Portugal. Nevertheless, I found them to be courteous and efficient.

I am using Trans-Portugal as they have displayed more professionalism than others and while they are not the least expensive they took the time to visit my home to see the nature and volume of the project. It is worth mentioning that the standard insurance cover is £25,000 and while it might cover a-hoc items - the contents of a home would normally be greater than that - which requires an additional premium. It was not until I read the Terms ans Conditions that I discovered that anomaly - something that was not flagged earlier.

The proof of the pudding will be in the eating - June 25th will hopefully not give me 'indigestion'
