Could I please ask guest how he managed to travel with a cat from UK to PT. I can understand it would be possible with a dog who could be exercised etc. I intend to fly with the cat while my other half drives over. Unless anyone can tell me any tips to drive with a cat. Obviously a cat box is needed but what about toilet stops, hatel stops etc

Hi Bobby,
We did the trip with our GS Dog via the Channel Tunnel staying in 2 hotels, 1 in France and the other in Spain before arriving in the Algarve....everytime we stopped for fuel, I took our dog for a walk etc.
With a cat, of course you need a large cage with a litter tray and a cat could be left in the car over night (of course depending on the time of year and temp etc)..... I think Blue at the moment is waiting to get on line...and therefore, possible cannot easily respond to your enquiry..and I am not sure if she actually took the cats into the hotels...ie. dogs are acceptable but not sure on cats...but if you ring the hotels in advance they will of course advice you (as we did with our dog)
I think your plans at the moment maybe the best...fly with pussykins etc.

ps make sure you put your cat on all the preventations medications for Portugal (some very important), your vet in the Uk can advice you and it is wise if possible to start the courses before you leave the UK. Thank you for your reply Nightrider. We have had a per passport done for the cat and he has had a rabies injection, what other precautions do you suggest? I think we will stick to flying with the cat it seems the best option for the cat.

We have only dogs, so I would not like to give you incorrect advice, so I am hoping Gambrinus or Kteee(our moderators) when viewing your request one of them will pick up on it i.e.they both have cats.... or maybe Blue if she is now on line!...or one of our other Registered Members. If you registered as a member yourself you could of course pm Gambrinus, other than that as soon as you arrive contact your local vet or the one we use which I have supplied the details for already. Your Vet in the UK should also be able to advise.

Our cats just have the normal boosters they would have in the uk (although they were all algarve strays originally) - you can also get frontline etc here for flea and tick prevention.

I do know of someone who successfully drove out with 4 cats from the uk, but flying may be the best option.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, apart from internet access difficulties it has been a very, very hectic last couple of weeks.
As far as driving the cat out it helps if you really know your cats character & habits, out cat is 17 years old so I know her very well & she me, she tends to be happy if I'm there whatever is going on. We have a large 4 x 4 car so the dogs were in the back, the cat was in an ordinary cat box behind the front passenger seat & the rest of the car was loaded to the gunnels. She spent most of the time in her box, some of the time on my lap & some of the time perched on top of the luggage, when we stopped to relieve the dogs I put her cat tray in the dog section, showed her were it was & left her to it (she never used it in the car). She came into the hotel rooms with us & had free run of the room, we put the cat tray in the bathroom (which she used immediately) & left her in the room when we went out to eat or to exercise the dogs. I have to say I can't quite believe how smoothly it all went. But as I say you really need to know your cat & be very careful, I knew my cat could be let loose in the car, I knew she wouldn't panic & try & bolt when the car doors were open, otherwise we would have just kept her in her box, as it was we really enjoyed the drive down.

Touch wood (& anything else that may bring luck) we are getting on brilliantly! Everyone that we have met & had dealings with could not have been nicer or more helpful - can it last? I certainly hope so.
Having a little trouble adjusting to portuguese measures though , H says I should take more water with it but the ice just slows down the drinking
