Those banks...

Hi,
Every time I receive a cheque from abroad into my Portuguese bank account, they charge 13 euros for the pleasure of receiving it! even when the cheques are Euros from Ireland! GRRRRRRR

Does anyone have any ideas

how to receive money without having to lose a chunk of it in this way?

It will probably work out more expensive but have you thought about PayPal?

If you can avoid a cheque direct transfer using the IBAN system from bank to bank is usually free at this end and often to send too.

Who are you banking with Captain ?

Last month I deposited a cheque for €100 from Ireland, and my BPI bank statement showed a receipt of €100. No charges at all. I have similarly deposited Sterling cheques and although the exchange rate wasn't the very best, no charges were levied. Mind you the sterling cheque has been known to take 3-5 weeks to clear, but who knows where that delay occurs

Thanks Al-garb, Lazer Blazer and e-Richard - what a helpful bunch of replies.
I shall try paypal and the IBAN system, and incidentally sounds like my Caixa Deposito Geral is not doing me any favours with the 13 euro charge just for the pleasure of them receiving my money!

Yes, I've already got the Swift system going and checking out Paypal.

Just another experience to put in the melting pot....... We transfer money by IBAN bank transfer a couple of times a year from our Lloyds account in Uk to 'top up' our Millenium account in Lagoa. Lloyds charge us a flat fee of £20 each time we do this plus a minimal charge from Portugal of around £2 each time. But the money does get into the Portuguese account within 2 or 3 days.

Intrigued to hear how we can do these tranfers without paying anything - suspect it's not possible without changing banks!

Not sure if this will help has haven't tried it but I think our bank (Barclays in Lagoa) mentioned this some time ago. Will look into it more when I get time.

At this end BES have never charged and I send from the UK by currency broker. Again no charge and their rates beat the banks. I believe some UK banks "premium" accounts offer "free" deals
