spoke to a man today
conversation went as follows -

man : ..where are you from?
me: uk and you...portugal?!
man : NO FROM THE ALGARVE
me. oh ???
man. yes the algavians are different (understatement of the year!) ..you see when the king was here ...he was king of portugal and the algarve
me. oh !! is there a difference?
man. yes in the north of portugal they call us from morroco ..but we are more arab.

so if you ever wandered why things are "different " here ...seems its the arab influence.. so now you know.

Very true, Martin. All my mates in Lisboa say anything south of the Alentejo Baixo is Morocco as far as they are concerned and that this isn't "real" Portugal.
