My 19 year old son and friend would like to drive to our villa in June. Main reason for driving is that he is too young to rent a car. I've checked FAQ with no result, and the last thread on this forum was January 2004. Anyone have up-to-date recommendations for the route and stopover places?

I did it last year and it was great.
Two of us shared driving.
It can be done in three days!
Went via Calais, west of Paris ( don't go thru it!), to Biaritz, Straight down to Madrid and Saville.
Stayed at Formula One which is cheap and cosy!!
Also enjoyed a night in Saville.
From High Wycombe in Bucks it was about 1400 iles each way.

Great sites but they will need AC!!

hello, i've done this drive several times, the nicest way is west France, stop at Bordeaux, take the Mercure Book of French Hotels, there's dozens of them just off the motorway.
For a 2 night stopper stay in salamanca on second night, a really pretty town.
The Motorway to salamanca is obvious on the map, my recommendation from there is to get into Portugal asap and come down the motorway, a great road.

Barry, I did it a several times last years. Last time in January 2006. Always 'the Michelin-route' (see link in Peter's answer). It goes from Paris-Bordeaux- Salamanca-Castelo Branco-Santarem-Lagoa. Stop-over always somewhere near Bilbao.
Not the shortest and cheapest, but far the quickest route.

The route I chose was, Ferry from Plymouth,Devon to Santander, Spain then drive through the mountaions through Spain, pas through Madrid, and just follow the motorway to Portugal.

Thanks to those who replied. Have just returned from a great 3 weeks in CVO. Flew out from blue skies back to rain, and grass that seems to have grown out of control. May have to concrete over the UK plot!
