My name is Paul, happily married with a young family. We live in West Sussex in the UK and are thinking about moving out to Carvoeiro to live.

ps I know West and East Sussex well.

WE have close friends who made the move with a then 8 and 10 year old 2 years ago.
The children were enrolled at the international school at villamoura,
They would not now even consider moving back.
Rigthly or wrongly the children mix with other english kids although they are starting to learn portuguese.
They do all the things tht chidren of their age would do in the UK, cinema, sports activity clubs etc.
But they have the weather and a much safer and less stressfull environment to grow up in.

Hi Paul,
We moved here 18 months ago. We have 3 children at The International School. They have settled in very well and are enjoying life to the full.
The two youngest were no problem, soon made friends and never looked back. The eldest (then 11) was disgruntled for the first school term, but now does not even want to go back to the UK for a visit!!
I would say that the kids adapted much quicker to their new life than we did!

At that age it is fine, tbbr, I think the problems come when they are older and want to either continue their education, or get a job. There aren't many opportunities here for young people who want to build a career - unless it's in tourism and then the wages are extremely low.

I am sure that you are right KTEE, the eve of holiday flights to faro always seem to be full of older teenagers going home to Portugal from school or further education in the UK.
We know another couple who moved out last Oct with their 18 yr old son.
He has found work of a sort but it could hardly be called well rewarded.

It would be interesting to find out how many of those now moving out ( it has been established that the average age of ex pats is falling ) have children and what their expectations for their childrens futures are ?

Good question tbbr..Id be interested in that one too!
Mind you,at the same time, with unemployment on the rise here in UK..how are our youngsters, leaving school over next couple years,going to fare on the job front here in UK?

We are a young family. Our children are young (in their first years at the International School at Porches). I think that by the time our children are older there will be plenty of opportunities here for them (if we do decide to stay here). Things have changed a lot, even in the short time we have been here, although right now is not the best time to be a school leaver looking for a promising career.
