A lot of portuguese post offices have hot spots. Their web site shows them but sorry I can't remember the url.

There are also hot spots in main shopping malls such as Modelo food hall in Portimao and Shop Algarve.

Speaking of laptops can anyone help me please?Im not very good with comuters and I must have touched a wrong key as my typing is coming up in italics on emails.What do I do?

Hello, we are taking our vacation in Carvoeiro this Aug, unfortunately due to my business I need to bring the laptop. The villa we are saying in has a phone line, can someone recommend a free internet service in Portugal? When I say free I don't mean free calls just free access no rental r sign up costs.

The laptop does have built in wi-fi but I believe we are on the outskirts of town.

There's free Wi-Fi in Silves. It is located in the area around the town offices (camara) and Visitor information hut. You can park right there if you find an open spot or walk over to the area. I used go over and sit on the bench and use my laptop. One thing is either go when it is dark or cloudy or have a screen that you can see in the sunlight. Also there is a coffe shop there that you can probably go inside and use your laptop.

Everywhere else I found you have to pay a ridiculous fee to use the Wi-Fi. I also used many times the Kodak shop (located in the shopping building on the south side of the road where all the restaurants are) recommended in the previous message. His rates are very good. When I didn't feel like taking my laptop with me, I would download my info on a USB memory drive (keychain size) at the Kodak Shop then load it on my laptop at my apartment. It is amazing how much capacity a 512Mb USB memory chip can hold. A huge amount! You can also do this in reverse. Laptops can get heavy too, especially if you have the charging unit in your bag.

Not too fussed on carrying the laptop as I shall be taking the 12" iBook. As we are staying at a villa with a phone line I though I could simply hook up without leaving the place.

I checked the links on the homepage but was unable to find the details (my Portuguese is not that good), if it's anything like what we have in the UK I would simply require the phone number, username & password.

Just to the right of the square below the Town Hall (?) there's a map board and I'm pretty sure it shows the Silves hot spots. One being in that square. So you can sit by the fountain have a nice refreshing drink and work

When I read stuff like this, I always feel terribly ignorant. But describing that scene by the fountain in Silves, it sounds very inviting
I have brought my laptop with me for writing work and to play DVDs..but going online proved very expensive (my fault for not organising it properly this end!
Can you help me with this one please...my laptop operates from wireless here..so would it work in Carvoeiro in certain places or no?
Id like to take it to play DVDs..but it would be handy to work online there as well..

If it is simply set to access your wireless router at home and not to go through a LAN proxy server or out, then it will automatically find any wireless networks within range. What you may find is that the cafe operate it and you will need a key to get past their security. Might be the cost of a drink or a bit more, depending on how greedy they are.
