Well does it surprise you Bruxy. It certainly, does not surprise me.But then is Portugal any different than any other country. Uk denied selling arms to an Arab country which most parts of the world had agreed to block a while back. But some bright young man spotted long large tubes (that could be used for launching)going through Customs & Excise. I have no further comment to make.

No, unfortunately nothing surprises me in this world. I think everyone on the Iberian peninsula knows that Portugal has been habouring ETA terrorists and selling them arms for quite some time. :(

hi Bruxy!!!
good to see you posting again.
i had never imagined that, but it saddens my heart to know the truth, and the truth of the matter is corruption, like you i am a big fan of justice and it saddens me to think that Portugal has got involved with this org.

the truth is that until the G men appear in Portugal, who arent corrupt, they will get their way(big money) :x
so lets hope that through the disagreements or opposite opinions that the portuguese have towards the spanish they will out the ETA.

Yep, Luke, money talks and talks louder to some than others.

A friend of mine said to me this week that one of the staff in one of the banks in Carvoeiro said that she thinks Portugal will soon become Spain because nearly all the big companies in Portugal are Spanish owned. For example, EDP are Spanish now, I believe. Is she exaggerating? :?

regretabley not....
i have nothing against the spanish, as i have a lot of spanish friends, but they are a ....(better not say it just in case)
unfortunately Bruxy... there is no justice in the world, the criminal gets off light, while if you tried to front the villian and did him/her any injury you would end up worse off.....

i dont like talking about justice because it starts me off
like you say money talks.

so for now all we can do is sit and watch our world go into self destruct.

Well, it is like everywhere in this world, there are nice people and not so nice people. I don't think any of my Spanish mates are into conquering Portugal but then they are a bunch of hippies. You can generalise and stereotype about any nation, as we all do from time to time but you just have to find the people that make you happy and preferably, who have similar ethics and morals as you.

Spain have just overtaken Canada, I believe, to become the 8th largest economy in the world, so they must be doing something right, with or without ETA. :?

I find your discussion on this topic very interesting. You can tell the Portuguese not to worry about Spain taking over their country. If Spain is doing so well then it would be a loss to them if they ever did take over Portugal. In the corporate world you only aquire a company with a financial loss in order to use it as a tax deduction. In this case there would be no benefits to absorb Portugal unless there is oil somewhere. And if so, then Portugal should worry more about the Americans (Mr. Bush and his friends) rolling in. I am still looking for what Portugal can offer to the world. Tell me if you know.

As for Poprtugal selling arms, it is profitable until the day the customers use these arms against the seller. Most of the big countries, that being the U.S.A., Russia, France and many others are seeing their products being turned on them now. What goes around, comes around.

Yes, that is true, Hoser.

Sorry everyone,
I fogot yet again to sign in..i.e. it was my posting above under Guest.
Hoser, totally agree with your comment. But if you will forgive me, I am not sure if you have actually ever lived here in Portugal....I make this remark, because I once said to a Portuguese national and a friend, why are most Portuguese so apathic...no he said there is no such word in Portuguese...Bruxy overheard the conversation and came to my aid...and even when she spoke the word in Portuguese...he still said that he had not ever heard of such a word.....and this is basically the problem here in the Algarve & Portugal...."apathy"....together with....corruption which is rife and intimindation.
Lawyers walk around as though they are gods and local government officials likewise...the Portuguese are almost bowing to these individuals. It really is like stepping back into a time warp. The Portuguese here in the Algarve are frightened of these people. For example a visit from a Planning Officer sometimes unannouced, when they have gone your left wondering who owns your property you or they.

Bruxy remember the old blind lady who was one of our neighbours (who died last year)...who was 96yrs old..... who had no bathroom and a tin roof...and what did her immediate neighbour lawyer's father do......cut off her water because she owed him money for using his borehole... after which the lawyer son attempting to tell us off, for running a pipe from our borehole so she could have water...Hoser...if you have not lived here, with utmost respect you really do not know the half of it. Frankly, it makes me very uncomfortable at times in that I have so much compared to many, many Algarvian/Portuguese nationals who have almost nothing.....they don't even have reliable public transport and walk for miles to get basic things....and then people wonder why they don't smile much........N.R.

ps...... a Guest wrote today complaining on this forum and because some of us were relaxing.... by having some fun on here...well guest I say to you that if I did not.... I would explode with frustration at times....because I and others that live here....see what is going on...on a day to day basis....and that's without seeing animals in dreadful, dreadful conditions...

Now Nightrider you got me interested. What you say is absolutely correct. But this APATHY is not limited to Portugal. It is everywhere. I believe it accompanies a population that is not educated. I grew up as a child in Canada with parents who only finished basic school. They believed that the priests, lawyers and school teachers were the top of the pecking order because they were educated. Funny as you and I became educated and saw that these professionals are not as godly as we were to made believe, then the whole pecking order changed. I am neither of these professions but now I and the rest of my age group and younger have a fair amount of education, we believe we can do what anyone else can. In fact the lawyers and priests are now being investigated for their morality and the teachers are being questioned constantly about their teachings. Until Portugal catches up with the rest of the world in learnig everything, apathy will be there. People are not stupid. Give them a little bit of education and watch them grow mentally. That's why leaders of backward countries go after the intellegentsia first. Eventually the people get smart and revolution takes place. Guess who they string up first?

This is fun, isn't it?

Yes, I think Portugal could do with having another revolution, Hoser and education is the key.

In the American South, in the days before the Civil War, it was against the law to teach Negros to read.
Corruption which is rife and intimindation.
Lawyers walk around as though they are gods and local government officials likewise...the Portuguese are almost bowing to these individuals.
When the lawyers and local officials can define, interpret, write and enforce the laws, they are a force to be reckoned with.

If you have no, or little, resources....bowing to those indviduals may be your only option.
