Spoke to a Norfolk cousin this morning who isn't a happy bunny. Stood behind a Portuguese guy at the Job Centre he was surprised to hear that the guy was getting a lot more money than him. When he queried this amount the staff told him that the Pt. guy was in greater need and that just because my Uncle had worked and paid his tax all his life until redundancy didn't make any difference - he was also more or less told to shut up or get out. Locals in the town also went on to say the Portuguese guy had been given £4000 and had blown £3000 of it at the local bookies.
My Uncle has no problem with anyone coming over to work but the fact that the UK Govt. seem to give more help to newcomers must surely build up resentment especially when the guy was young and fit and my Uncle is in his 60's and struggling to find work.
Whats the situation if we want unemployment benefit in Portugal - can we just sign on etc. when we fly over and get housing benefit etc.? I was under the impression you could only be allowed to stay in the country if you could provide proof of where you would live and have enough money to live on for at least a year?

I am no expert in this area and haven't done it myself, but I believe you can only "sign on" and receive benefits in another EU country and that obviously includes Portugal, if you have been signing on in the UK for the previous 3 months before you relocate. There is then a limit, I think, for how long you can stay in another EU country looking for work. I have a link somewhere about this. I'll hunt it out and post it in a moment.

I was wrong...you have to be signing for 4 weeks before you relocate and you can sign for 3 months in your new EU country of choice. I have posted this previously on the forum.

UK contribution-based JSA in another EEA country

If you are getting UK contribution-based JSA, and you have been registered as available for work, usually for four weeks, at a UK Jobcentre Plus office or Jobcentre, you may be able to carry on getting UK contribution-based JSA for up to three months while you look for work elsewhere in the EEA . But you must have been getting contribution-based JSA before you go abroad.

UK contribution-based JSA is paid by the employment services in the EEA country in which you register for work. Payment is made in local currency at the rate of contribution-based JSA you were paid in the UK, and is authorised on form E303. This form is issued by The Pension Service.

If you can get UK contribution-based JSA in another EEA country, you can get a letter from your Jobcentre Plus office or Jobcentre to help you in registering for work in that country. Give it to the authorities who run the employment services in the other country.

If you can get UK contribution-based JSA in another EEA country and you are going to look for work in any of the following countries, you will also be given form E303:

We sorted out all the paperwork for my daughter, who has a seasonal job in the UK,and has paid all her dues.She is here for about 3 months.
When we had finished the paperwork,we asked the young lady when would she recieve her payments,she said in about 8 weeks!!!!!.
We thought she was joking,but of couse they don't do jokes!
Whatever would the dogooders in the UK say if it happened there????

8 weeks...that is just so Portugal. Your extended family is suppose to support you until then, I suppose.

By the way, I've got my own fridge. It currently contains cheese, coffee, butter, dog food and WINE and I think there is a frozen roll and some tuna steaks in the freezer part. Not bad eh?

Well I suppose it depends how you look at it Gadjo. HP lives in Carvoeiro but yes, the original posting from a guest was a general Portugal/UK benefits query/statement. However, Carvoeiro is part of Portugal and a lot of people that come to live and work here might be glad of that information. I remember posting about the car matriculation process on general Carvoeiro. Should that have gone in Chit Chat? Maybe we should have a bureaucracy section then, as I think these matters aren't for general chit chat either.

As for the stuff about my fridge between me and HP, does it really bother you that much? If so, keep taking the pills and lighten up a bit.
