I believe that all vehicles need to have a green card, a blue card and a registration document. Is this correct? Any information would be appreciated.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am 99% sure you need the following :

Green Card = Livrete - this is the registration document
Blue Card = Titulo - the declaration of ownership
A4 Sheet = IPO - the Portuguese equivalent of an MOT

As a general rule, I keep any piece of paper that has anything to with my car either in my car or on my person. If you need any further info, I can recommend PM-ing Bruxinha as she's very knowledgeable on such matters.

All documents should be carried in the car to show to police when stopped + in addition you need to carry the insurance doc. "Stamp" from car tax, insurance and MOT must be displayed in windscreen. If you let anyone else drive your car there must be a declaration to that effect which specifically names them carried in the car as well

I actually was still thinking as to what Avvie meant by "registration document", as like you said the blue document is the ownership one and the green document (livrete) is like a UK log book/VRD. Of course, you also need your tax (selo), inspection and insurance disks showing on the windscreen.

I think I read they are replacing the blue and green documents for one single document next year.

Yes, best to keep all paperwork relating to the car in the glove compartment, plus have your driving licence and ID (passport or residency card) on you at all times.

Hi Guest1...sorry overlapped with you there. Good reminder about the declaration for those who you allow to drive your car. I have a copy of what you need to write on the declaration in Portuguese should anyone want a copy. Even though we are obviously related, my dad and I both have a written declaration from my mum saying we can drive her car in the glove compartment...just in case.

Ok... I am a Portuguese Resident, but I never show my Residéncia if I get tugged by the plod (I only show my UK Passport as ID) as I have been told that you are supposed to obtain a Portuguese Driving Licence once you become a resident... is this true?

My licence is one of the new Euro-spec UK Photo-Licences, but that didn't cut it with the local GNR, and I was told to get a Portuguese one.

Yer, it is probably best to just show your passport LR. But duuude's dad, who is Belgian, has a document translated into Portuguese from the EU, which says that the Portuguese are basically talking a load of rubbish and that if you have a driving licence from ANY of the EU member countries, it is valid, regardless whether you have a passport or residency. When he got stopped by the plod once, he showed them the document. Several of them stood around reading it, sratched their heads and said oh well on your way. I am still waiting for him to get me a copy to look at.

OK, back to legal papers. I'm now told that if selling a car, a form has to be picked up from the "Conservatory"??? for signing by the seller. Can anyone enlighten me as to what this is please? Also, would very much like to receive copy of Portuguese Declaration letter needed when driving another's car.

Hi Avvie, the form is a modelo nº2 and you can either pick it up from your local Conservatória (DGRN) or click on the link below and download it from the Internet. It is the second one down in the list clearly marked "Modelo Nº2". Make sure when you print it off you do it on only one piece of paper, i.e. page 1 on one side and page 2 on the reverse side, or they won't accept it. Then you and and the buyer take it to your local Conservatória with copies of your passports/residências and they send it up to Lisboa to arrange a new livrete for the buyer. It costs the buyer around 65 Euros I seem to remember. I'll pm you the declaration letter.

I have always shown my passport and UK driving licence because it avoided the argument as to whether you need a Portuguese licence with a residencia.
When the new driving code came in this year it was originally stated that if you were a resident you had to exchange your UK driving licence for a Portuguese licence. However this was challenged and the latest position is that you can keep a UK licence but you have to register it with the DVG in Faro. They have pre-printed forms to fill in for this purpose and you get a receipt to add to your car paperwork so that if necessary you can prove to the police that you have registered your licence.

This may be a bit much for some of the police and it could still be a good idea to show a passport with a UK driving licence.

That's very interesting. Don't suppose you know the number of the form/modelo do you guest? I will have a look at the DGV web site to see if it can be downloaded. Only problem is having to go to the DGV at Faro and wait years to be seen after you've filled it out.

The form in question is not numbered and looks like an ad hoc document to cover a changing situation. It is headed DECLARACAO and has spaces to fill in driver's name and address, details of the residencia and the driving licence.The final section says "vem nos termos do nº 12 de Artigo 122º do Codigo da Estrada, Decreto-Lei nº 44/2005 de 23 de Fevreiro de 2005, publicado no Diaria de Republica nº 38, communicar para efeitos de actualizao do registo de conductor a minha residencia em territorio nacional, jutando para o efeito fotocopia da Licenca de Conucao e do Cartao de Residente"

I expect that there will be further developments but at least with this document one is complying withe the legal requirements as they currently stand.
