Portugal police investigate banks
Portuguese police are investigating several banks amid claims of money-laundering and tax evasion.

Banks, homes of bank managers and legal firms with links to off-shore business have been searched as part of an operation that began earlier this week.

Some of Portugal's biggest banks are among the financial institutions which are being investigated.

Most of the banks have acknowledged the searches and said they are happy to co-operate with the police.

Director of Banco Espirito Santo, Ricardo Salgado, insisted his bank had done nothing wrong.

"We have nothing to fear. I have confidence in the BES team," he told state television RTP.

"We have a team of professionals, there may have been some negligence here or there, but the law is fundamentally being followed."

Millennium-BCP is among the others banks targeted by investigators. The Correio da Manha newspaper said dozens more searches were expected before next week.

It was on the front page of the national daily newspaper Correio da Manha yesterday. If you speak Portuguese you can look on their web site at www.correiomanha.pt.

Basically the article confirmed in more detail the bbc story you have read. They are investigating various banks and legal firms (and I think I also read something about real estate companies) for money laundering and tax evasion.

I think Portugal may finally be trying to get its act together, or is that just wishful thinking. Vamos ver as they say!

Bruxy,

Yes the article was very interesting. So we now, as they say "watch that space". One can only but hope that the real revolution in Portugal is finally coming and to assist firstly, all the very poor Portuguese. I.e. as you have pointed out to me Portuguese forums cleary identify ordinary Portuguese nationals comments with regard their own "fat cats", whilst many struggle to live.

Regards,

As someone asked originally for any more information on this story, I thought I would post this link from the Correio da Manha newspaper this morning:

http://www.correiomanha.pt/noticia.asp? ... al=21&p=94

Apparently, 200 companies are now being looked into, for fraud and tax evasion, in connection to the original swoop on several banks and lawyer's offices in October this year. This investigation could run for some time it seems.
