35,00 homes does put a lot of the Algarve developments in perspective! I don't want to see the Algarve overdeveloped but I think it is better controlled than in Spain.

I sincerely hope that this is a Ray of Hope for the Algarve and Portugal?

The real debate in Murcia is between the needs of the agro business and developers.
In Murcia there are thousands of hectares of poly tunnels with tomatoes etc grown in a soup of chemicals and fertilisers.

At least we don,t see this in the algarve , yet?

According to The Times this is a Polaris development and they advertise it as "a new concept in living" Well without water it certainly will be.
Just for once, it seems, the developers have not exaggerated

I think there has been similar questions some time back...but where exactly is this racing track to be built.......where will the access roads be ?.....
and can anybody tell me how far the noise will travel..?...and finally will the Alvor aerodrome really be expanded to support this track...are we to get a mini Gatwick scenario ??

That's how the vast majority of toms are grown, including in England. It's called hydroponics. It is used to grow those perfectly round yet tasteless toms that English people eat. The Spanish, bless them, won't eat them.

About a year ago I was speaking to a director of a well known reputable swimming pool company,with its head quarters in Lagos. He told me that a brand new international airport was being considered on the West Coast and if there has to be another, there would seem some sense in that location, but of course at the moment it would appear only heresay? Therefore, surely it would seem somewhat stupid to put another airport at Alvor. The problem is for those of us who live out here, it is often the case, that we hear snippet's of news, gossips whatever i.e. such as the EU rapping Portugal's knuckles over not coming into line with removing their present residency requirement, but I have not heard any confirmation of the date that this is to be implemented and this in general is how it goes on out here.

What really makes me angry living here is that unlike other EU countries when a neighbour or developer wishes to build, sufficient time is not given to the surrounding neighbours to make any representation they wish to the local camara prior to it being considered by the Planning Committee. I. e in the UK and additional countries a public notice has to be displayed on the site informing of the proposed application. The council notify the neighbours/householder of the proposed planning application by letter. Here, you could wake up one morning and I am quite sure some reading this will have already experienced, when opening your windows to bring in the sun to see a yellow peril in the shape of a JCB and then an Adviso Notice, which of course confirms a planning application has been passed and such a situation being the first time one is made aware of it.

Portugal's administration really does need an absolute sweep, and I do not think many reading this will disgaree when I simply say "don't anyone hold your breaths".

NB: FOR SILVES RESIDENTS: I note that Isabel Soares proposed new council for Silves includes Verna Kinder(English) and Susan Trew (English) lets hope both speak fluent Portuguese and that some good will come of this, that is if Soares party gets back in tomorrow. Watch this space.

It may be called hydroponics but in the uk the did not use diluted sewage
( due to lack of water ) as has been done in spain this year.
There is virtually NO uk glasshouse industry left due to costs of heating
which of course in Spain they do not need.
However they do need water which is in short supply.
The spanish may not eat the tomatoes. lettuce, peppers, strawberries etc. WE DO.

A West coast airport would be an intelligent decision one would think..but Lagos Camara has been sparring with Alvor about building a new airport..Alvor of course already has one...now the story is that with the new F1 piste going ahead ( Yes it is ..really ) they are talking about a new Airport just south of Monchique.......The worry is......we have heard all this before but now it is reality...the F1 piste is starting to be built.........OK...so with that out the way and NO objections from anybody that counts.......
The nxt move will be Alvor to be extended and expanded...both Camara Lagos and Monchique areas have no money.......so Alvor it is....Bird Sanctuary.....nobody interested......Noise / Pollution etc..nobody cares. President Luz has made it clear...Portimao backs both the new F1 Piste and a much revamped Alvot airport.............so it will happen..and it is heppening NOW as the trucks start to move to clear the area around the F1 place......

There are 50 acres of peppers just a few miles away from me, one of the largest pepper nurseries in Europe for instance.

Interestingly the sewage farm down the road spreads the sludge on the local fields every year around this time. A bit smelly but apparently not life threatening.
