I once thought they were storks. Are there any storks in Portugal - and if so, how do they differ from cranes?

You can usualy tell the for difference by the length of their legs, stride and their ablity to fly.

There is another way to tell........

If it delivers babies, it's a stork.

there is a big storks' (or stork's - don't know how many actually LIVE there)nest in Silves - on top of an old factory chimney round the back. I've got a photo somewhere....

I suppose that chicken is the national bird of Portugal. What is a national bird anyway? Is ours the Queen?

There are lots of storks (red legs) in Portugal and in Andalusia. They hang out in marshy areas, which might be dwindling if the drought persists. There are usually some in the field along the 125 by the Fatacil. When you drive on the Autoroute towards Spain somewhere after Faro there is a valley and you can see their nests on every one of the power poles. In Isla Cristina (Spain) we saw a church that had about half a dozen nests draped all around the spire.
Of course you can often also see flamingos in the lagoon on the North side of the Portimao bridge, I seem to remember there is a stork's nest on top of one of the pylons. Look up, waaayyy up!
